Growing up in Topeka has given me the opportunity to sample local fare from the last 50+ years until now. From local Mom and Pop cafes to big chain restaurants, I hope to give readers a "slice" of good eating in Topeka.

Local bar and grill offers a great place to hang out

July 27, 2015

I’m always on the hunt for not only a good place to eat, but a great place to hang out. Awhile back a coworker suggested Quinton’s Bar and Grill, so one day I went to check it out. It has become one of my favorite places to go! I’m usually hesitant about going to a bar and grill because I don’t like noisy places. However, the times I’ve been there, Quinton’s has been pretty quiet. I was there once on a Friday night there was a game on TV, but it wasn’t wasn’t very loud.

Quinton’s has a good variety of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, wraps and baked potatoes. I’ve have a few of their sandwiches, but my favorite thing is the Grilled Chicken Queso Baked Potato - a large, buttered baked potato topped with queso, grilled chicken, cheese and bacon bits. It’s delicious!!

Quinton’s is located just west of Huntoon and Gage. For those of us who are old enough to remember where the Gage Four Theaters were, that’s where Quinton’s is now. Go check it out and let me know how you like it!

New Pizza Place Helps Fundraiser

March 16, 2015

Recently some of my coworkers at the Capital-Journal ordered personal pizzas from Pie Five, a new eating establishment in the capital city, as a fundraiser. The son of one of my coworkers plays on a baseball team and they were trying to raise money for a tournament. A portion of the money for our order went to the boys’ baseball team. Not only did we enjoy some delicious pizza, we helped the boys achieve their goal of having enough money for their tournament.

I’m impressed that an eating establishment that hasn’t been in Topeka for very long would contribute to the community like that. I like it when a business gives back to the community. All businesses should do that. And we as consumers should not only support the community, but support our local businesses as well. That’s what keeps our community going.

Pie Five offers a build your own pizza option or you can choose from a list of ready-made pizzas. So if you’re looking for a new place to eat and you love pizza, I encourage you to give Pie Five a try.
