CurlyGrrrl never orders straight from a menu, believes it is almost always Tostada:30, has very high expectations when it comes to sandwiches AND would love to see more Topekans up the ante on their fanaticism when it comes to things that go in their mouths.

Old school Italian goodness at Paisano’s

February 29, 2012

Paisano’s is old school Topeka. Many of us have fond memories of Paisano’s as the place to go for high school semi-formal, prom and Valentine’s Day dinners. Well, now that we’re all grown up and Bosco’s has taken over the little romantic spot that Paisano’s used to occupy, their location in Fleming Place still boasts very good homemade Italian food.

As we toiled over where we should have our slightly belated Valentine’s dinner, we decided to keep it traditional and go with Italian. Since we don’t “do” corporate chains (unless forced), Paisano’s was the obvious choice. It was a smart move. I had the Raviolo del Mar and it was exceptional. I assume that they make the raviolis by hand — they were light and filled with perfectly cooked morsels of scallops, lobster and shrimp. The sauce on top was a rich creamy tomato basil sauce, which was a perfect complement to the pasta. Of course, we ate enough of the salad to sink a ship — the other advantage is that their signature salad is far superior to anything you’ll find on Wanamaker.

So, for a romantic dinner or “just because” (martinis are only $5 on Wednesdays), make sure you put this spot on your priority dining list.

Hey Mr. Moose! More pork, please

February 1, 2012

Ah, The Blue Moose. I can almost feel the din of noise in my ears as I think of the name. When we went last Thursday, we had to park two parking lots away.

Whatever you thought about the now closed Brick Oven Grille, this is the opposite. Big screen TVs, bright Blue Moose-aritas, a rambunctious crowd at the bar. It’s a see-and-be-seen kind of spot — as I said, quite the opposite of the former tenant. At its heart, it is a sports bar — but somehow manages to feel upscale. Thursday nights boast $1.50 beers (really — almost any beer) and on Tuesdays, you can pick from a selection of $10 bottles of wine. Despite all of this adult fun, it still feels right to take the little one with us. We don’t have to worry about her being loud ... because the adults are MUCH louder.

Their menu is good ... but stay away from the low-cal options. This blogger would advise you to go straight for the macaroni and cheese with braised pork belly. Although it sounds exotic, pork belly is basically chubby bacon. The crispy rich porkiness (yes, I just made that up) is perfect with the gut-busting creaminess of the macaroni and cheese. At this point, you may as well go ahead and have that extra beer, too. (They also offer a delicious Reuben made with pork belly if you want to try the pork and mac-n-cheese isn’t your thing.)

You can thank me in the morning ... or after your nap. Trust me, you’re gonna need a nap.

Indeed, monkeys will fly

December 5, 2011

We live just west of Washburn — very near the Best Dairy Queen on Earth. Therefore, we talk often of how we should walk to College Hill Tavern instead of driving since it is only a few blocks, but the number of times this has actually happened could be counted on one hand. Now, the talk has begun again — this time with the destination being Flying Monkey Handcrafted Brews. Coffee, beer, and what promises to be fantastic food — right at the corner of 17th & Washburn. (Oh, and don’t miss the fab art by Judith White and Shanon Fouquet.)

Now, I know that this is supposed to be a food blog – and until tomorrow or the next day (December 6 or 7), they aren’t serving food yet – but I am just so excited about this place. Oozing with pride of ownership, this concept showpiece is the perfect way to experience PT’s fine coffees.

As owner Jeff Taylor puts it, this is coffee the way coffee should be – purchased from growers at a fair price, roasted by hand right here in Topeka and enjoyed with the panache of fine wine. This is not Starbucks. There are no decanters of hours-old coffee sitting in a row. All coffee is made to order – and the menu reflects a purist take on coffee drinks and beans with which some patrons might be unfamiliar. Hang in there, try something new, and you’ll be glad you did.

Brazilian delights at Toucan Express

November 10, 2011

In the middle of our lunch, a 50-something woman approaches our table and in an interesting accent I do not recognize, says: "So, how do you like the food?" I must have looked quizzically at her — because she quickly said "This is my restaurant — and I'm also the cook.

It isn't very often at any restaurant in Topeka — let alone a buffet — where the cook comes out to see what you think. This pride and sense of ownership is something that you taste in the food — so don’t be turned off by the austere décor.

Toucan Express Bar & Cuisine offers Brazilian home cooking. This isn't a Brazilian BBQ as has become so trendy recently, but instead, this is the kind of food you might find if you visited the home of a Brazilian family. Chicken stroganoff — delicious with a traditional sour cream and paprika base. Baked cauliflower with a layer of crispy cheese on top that was perfect with the Brazilian hot sauce that you'll find on the table. Black beans, jasmine rice, stewed beef roasted squash ... simple foods all with bright spices which were surprising and delicious. Turkey and stuffing was prepared with a nod to the familiarity of the traditional American dish, but with slightly different spices — raisins, too.

Toucan's buffet is open for lunch and they have a dinner menu available in the evening. The owner told me that they are also taking reservations for Thanksgiving. She bragged about how she's been working to put her own spin on traditional American foods — and is certain that her diners will love the results. They also cater — putting them at the very top of my catering call list.

Burger Stand opens at last

September 9, 2011

The clouds parted....the angels sang....and the BURGER STAND opened!!

I have to admit to having many days of great doubt about the success of the College Hill retail development. When we started planning for the inaugural Arty Party in 2009 (which took place in the still-empty space across 15th street), the owners of the space said that the space was soon to be filled with all manner of amazing things.... [crickets chirping].

Well, now I've been happily proven wrong. The Burger Stand is OPEN! At about 8 p.m. last night, I placed the 3rd order at the now open, and definitely awesome, Burger Stand at College Hill.

I ordered the "smoke" burger - thick slabs of bacon, smoked gouda, and cocoa-chipotle ketchup. They took my request for it to be cooked medium rare very seriously - which does not happen often in Topeka. It was a big burger - not greasy in the slightest - leaving the crisp of the toasted bun intact.

The truffle fries, whose reputation precedes them, were amazing. Crispy, cheesy, truffle-y and decadent. The layout of the space is awesome - one half is pure bar and grill....the back half is more bar with pool tables and ping pong.

The outside tables will be a perfect way to spend cool fall evenings. From lunch time to late night, the Burger Stand is sure to be a hit. Reports are that it is soon to be joined by a beer-and-coffee joint masterminded by PT's Jeff Taylor as well as the WU bookstore.

It is great to have owner Robert Krause, the foodsmith that originally opened New City Café, and his wife Molly, back in town. I hope that you'll go over - have a burger....have a beer...and shoot some pool...and stay really late. Let's show 'em our inner foodie, Topeka!

The Mac-n-Cheese with Shrimp and Lobster at Bosco's, 435 S. Kansas Ave., in downtown Topeka. (FOOD+FLICKS & CURLYGRRRL)

Guilty pleasures at Bosco’s

September 6, 2011

It isn’t very often I actually order true “comfort food” from a menu. When eating out, I try to stick with salad or at least something that isn’t completely slathered in cheese or fried. However, I will admit that if I’m going for broke, all bets are off, which is what I got into Thursday night.

BOSCO'S
WHERE: 435 S. Kansas Ave.
PHONE: (785) 232-6726

As we perused the menu at Bosco’s, I couldn’t resist the mac-n-cheese with shrimp and lobster. That’s right. Mac-n-cheese so cheesy it’s bubbling at the edge of the plate. A good-sized lobster tail cooked just a little on the rare side sitting right in the middle. Let’s take a moment to discuss this lobster: Lobster is SUPPOSED to be cooked a little rare - leaving the meat moist and sweet. Most places - including large chain seafood restaurants which shall remain nameless - do a considerably better job with cheddar biscuits than lobster tails. Two thumbs up to Bosco’s for getting it right.

Anyhow….The two large grilled shrimp had perfect little bits of char on them. The macaroni was gooey with garlicky cheese - oven-crisp breadcrumbs coating the top. A simple, textural delight. I’ve kind of been craving it ever since we got done with it, and that doesn’t happen all that often – especially not when it’s a $26 entrée. It might very well be the best thing I’ve eaten in months…paired perfectly with an icy cold $3 can of Tallgrass Ale…and please don’t forget to suck those little pieces of meat out of the tail fins. Mmmmmm. Heavenly.

An oasis on North Kansas Avenue

August 24, 2011

I remember the days when I’d go with my mom to Topeka Carnival Supply for little American flags to use in the Potwin 4th of July parade. That is the only thing that I remember about North Kansas Avenue prior to this summer.

SUB TROPIXS
WHERE: 909 N. Kansas Ave.
PHONE: (785) 233-7830

The last two times I’ve been to the area, however, there was nowhere to park because there was so much activity. Right in the middle of the hubbub is Sub Tropixs, a new yummy sandwich shop. You pick your meat, pick your cheese, and they toast it up for you. Take your warm gooey meal over to the toppings bar and put whatever you would like on top. No haggling with the “sandwich artist” behind the sneeze guard about exactly how much mayo is required.

The relatively new lunch and dinner spot is a true labor of love. The owner has owned the building for some time and spent the last years before retirement planning every last detail – resulting in an interior that is nothing like you would imagine. Ride a mechanical surfboard, play video games (every sandwich gets you a couple of tokens), and don’t forget to put your choice of syrup flavors into your beverage! If you’ve got a group of 10, call ahead and they’ll pick you all up in their wood-paneled station wagon limo. Pretty awesome.

Cafe Next Door: Chorizo-oh-oh-oh

August 9, 2011

As we drove past the gas pumps, I have to admit that I was having second thoughts about our breakfast choice. We'd purchased a Daily Deal coupon from the Topeka Capital-Journal (http://dailydeals.cjonline.com/) and were headed to the Cafe Next Door to grab a bite.

The first thing I notice is a note posted in the window that says that all of their tomatoes are locally grown. A very good sign. We enter and are greeted by the friendly staff and given menus that explain their commitment to local foods.

The menu is awesome, offering a mix of breakfast, sandwiches and "country style" favorites. I ordered the "Not Egg-actly Taco Salad" which is a really brilliant take on everything that is good about breakfast. A large house-made flour tortilla topped with wilted spinach, potatoes, cheese, chorizo, and 2 eggs (I chose to have mine over easy as I am still trying to make up for all of the raw eggs I didn't eat while pregnant). The sides of tomato salsa, green tomatillo salsa and sour cream topped it off perfectly. The spinach balances the meat and potatoes - making it seem lighter and healthier even though I'm pretty sure that you can't call anything with that much sausage on it "healthy." It's a really perfect mix of textures and flavors - and it doesn't get any better as far as quality goes. 5 stars!

Juli’s ‘Blue Cow’ – Simply delish

July 25, 2011

So yes. I have been a verrrrry lazy blogger. But I'm back and rejuvenated and ready to blog up a storm. There are several new food spots in good old Top City since I've been on "hiatus" and I'm looking forward to sharing the new eats with all of you.

JULI'S COFFEE AND BISTRO
WHERE: S.W. 4010 Huntoon
PHONE: (785) 228-2001

Because I LOVE sandwiches, I'll start with Juli's Coffee and Bistro, S.W. 4010 Huntoon — located in the "heart" of the Barmuda Triangle — next to the very best Filipino grocery store in Topeka, Mabuhay. Juli's is a cute little coffee and sandwich spot where the menu boasts unique and delicious sandwich options, great coffee and pastries.

After considerable debate, my choice was the "How Now Blue Cow" — roast beef, blue cheese, bacon, lettuce, and tomato on fresh chewy chibatta. My hubby went for the "Mrs. Smith and the Pig" — ham, cheddar, sliced granny smith apples and garlic mustard on ciabatta. We wished that we could have stayed longer to enjoy the comfy and friendly atmosphere — but we will definitely be back to try one of the other awesome selections.

I wish that I could delve into the gourmet mouthfeel of their tasty sauces - or the exotic umami (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umami) you will experience as you try their green tea. But you know, sometimes food is just simple, easy and delicious. If that's what you're after, you'll love Juli's!

The Chocolate Chocolate Chip ice cream at the Iwig Dairy store, 724 SW Gage Blvd. (FOOD+FLICKS)

Milky, marvelous, mooooooooo!

April 21, 2011

It probably has something to do with the fact that I remember having an actual milk man – but I have a “thing” for dairy products. Growing up, we left our back door unlocked and he would come in and put milk in the fridge. I was an exceptionally shy child and so I always had to go down and talk to the milk man – assigned to politely ask him how his day had been and tell him about mine.

This brings me to the Iwig Dairy store (724 SW Gage Blvd), which not only sells delicious Iwig milk straight from the farm, they also sell homemade ice cream. The fudge is my favorite flavor – although the rocky road and chocolate chip are not far behind. The texture is reminiscent of the chocolate malt treats at a baseball stadium with a little bit of icy goodness in there – except it is exceptionally rich and creamy. I am pretty sure that we should all be thankful that nutritional information is not printed on the packaging.

It’s clear that it is homemade - in the best possible way. You open the lid and it has a fresh, creamy scent not found in store bought ice cream. It is such a treat to have a product like this available every day of the week – not only home made, but just miles away from the actual source. A true local treasure.
