The scent of barbecue still wafted through the air Monday afternoon at the Famous Dave’s on Wanamaker, but no food was being cooked there anymore.

The location, 1625 S.W. Wanamaker, had closed. The decor could still be seen inside the dining area through the window.

Two signs were posted on different doors at the restaurant, both relaying the same message: “Sorry, our doors are now closed. Thank you for your continued support over the past few years. Gift cards may be used at all other Famous Dave’s locations.”

Famous Dave’s signs on the building had been removed.

Joseph Vagher, the senior director of franchise operation with Famous Dave’s, said the company that franchised the Topeka and St. Joseph, Mo. locations, which closed at the end of June, according to a news article from the St. Joseph News Press, both closed because they were suffering from low sales.

A Topeka Capital-Journal reporter called the restaurant, where the phone rang multiple times. A person who answered the phone at the corporate office, but refused to give her name, also confirmed the location’s closing.

The Topeka location still appeared on the Famous Dave’s website as of 5:05 p.m. Monday.

According to Food+Flicks, the Wanamaker location opened in 2009, taking over for a Ruby Tuesday’s “that underwent a big remodel.”

The restaurant placed fourth in the Best of Topeka competition in 2013 for best barbecue. It was awarded third place for best barbecue in 2014.

This is the second barbecue restaurant in Topeka to close in the past month.
