November 13, 2014

La Siesta in Oakland, 201 N.E. Woodruff, is closed for the month.

Co-owner Frank Herrera is having knee replacement surgery, according to the Herrera’s granddaughter, who posted a comment on Facebook about the closing.

“My grandpa is having surgery and it all depends how that goes,” she said in a Facebook message to The Topeka Capital-Journal.

Herrera and his wife, Connie, have owned and operated the restaurant for nearly 40 years.

A sign on La Siesta’s door alerts hungry customers to the closing. Some people have inquired on the restaurant’s Facebook page about whether or not they will reopen, but the Herreras are taking are taking it “one week at a time” before figuring out what the future of the restaurant will be.

“Connie and Frank are friends, not bosses,” Diana Zarazua, one of the employees at the restaurant, told The Capital-Journal in Dec. 2013 for a Test of Time piece.
