A local Topeka bakery is making a format change, but people can still get their sweet treats through the business’ catering service.

The owners of Mad Eliza’s Cakes & Confections, Mark and Peggy Murnahan, announced earlier this month they were closing their doors and choosing to focus their energy on the pre-order and catering side of the bakery.

“We are making a positive change for our business, and for our family,” the couple wrote in a Facebook post dated Dec. 15. “It is bittersweet, but if you know us at all, then you know the sweet will win out.”

The post didn’t state the exact closing date, but the attached photograph of Mark and Peggy showed an empty counter and kitchen in the background at their location at 2839 S.W. 29th.

In the post, store overhead and long hours were listed as reasons for making the change. They also wrote the long hours were taking away from time spent with their four kids.

“The many extra expenses and workload of keeping and stocking a storefront can only be justified when there is a line at the counter a large portion of the time,” the couple said.

Going forward, the Murnahans said in the post they believe the change will improve the quality of their products and add a bounce to their step.
