PT’s at College Hill was named 16th on a list of the best independent coffee shops around the U.S. by, a website with recipes, information about trends in food and drink and features on the history of the things we love to consume.

The list was compiled by asking coffee bloggers, roasters, store owners and baristas to nominate their favorite locations, the site said. They submitted 150, and the panel chose the top 33 based on coffee and food quality, atmosphere, customer service and factors that make the coffee houses “unique.”

Most of the winners were concentrated in large cities on the coasts, but coffee houses in Midwestern cities Minneapolis, Chicago and Austin also made the list.

The site pointed to the quality of PT’s many coffee varieties and its food and alcohol menus, with the Flying Monkey chef salad singled out for praise.

PT’s Coffee Roasting Co. co-owner Jeff Taylor said he thought it was an honor to see one of the cafes they own on a list he said appeared to be very well-researched, but he doesn’t make decisions based on standing out from other coffee brewers.

“I don’t approach our coffee house by looking at other people in the market,” he said. “I approach our businesses by looking at how we can do things best.”

Some of those measures to ensure high quality include using coffee within three weeks after it is roasted (the flavor starts to break down after a month), training baristas to bring out the most in each cup and paying farmers higher prices so they can invest in their coffee crop, Taylor said. They also experiment to find the best way to grow and process coffee beans from different tree varieties and different geographic areas, he said.
