They were willing to split up a pizza to make two different halves which was very helpful. Good pizza very nice atmosphere and service was very good. Wait time was not too bad either.

AJ's offers menu items for everyone. I've tried multiple salads, calzones, pepperoni bricks, cinnamon knots, wings, and pizza. The food is great, and the atmosphere is even better. It's a good place for friends to hangout or to take your family. I tried one of their unique beers and didn't like it, so they offered me a domestic.
It's one of the best places to eat in Topeka.

I'm sure I'll catch some grief for this, but...

The subject of music/TV volume is close to my heart. We've been noticing lately that about everywhere we go for sit-down dinning we are bombarded with background noise from the TV or the sound system that virtually precludes conversation. This is particularly irritating during business luncheons or dinners and I'm glad to see it being addressed here. Not everyone cares about sports on TV, heard one, heard 'em all. Everything happening is being shown on the screen anyway so all one ends up hearing is some bleating commentator and crowd noise.

As to the volume of music, if I want to dance I'll go to a dance club. When I eat I want my companion to be able to hear me when I ask them to pass the salt, a napkin, or whatever, without shouting. Hopefully more restaurant managers are going to wise up that MOST of the time sound from electronic media is simply noise pollution.

It is encouraging to see the way you are responsive to, and soliciting feedback from your customers. Other Topeka business owners would do well to follow your lead.

Thank you for sharing some of the attitudes and practices at AJ's. I understand the idea behind "at your convenience" serving and you may want to clarify/convey that to other patrons. I've noticed that many Topekans expect the status quo, which is for a server to check in a few times and also to be on the lookout for glasses to fill.

I applaud the fact that you are trying a different approach with your business in general. Topeka can be a difficult environment for new businesses because the citizens here, as a whole, can be slow or resistant to try something out of the ordinary. So far, AJ's appears to be doing everything right and you seem to have a forward-thinking attitude. My advice to you is this: stay true to yourself and the business values and don't be afraid to target a "different" sort of crowd. You are earning loyal patrons just by putting yourself out there with a customer-first attitude.

Just the fact that you responded to my previous post in a timely manner with encouraging words is enough to bring me back to AJ's for many more visits.

Best wishes for you and AJ's,

The food and clean up is full service? It is a restaurant isn't it?

We've eaten at AJ's three times since it opened. It shows promise. The White Pie is a great offering.

I just don't like the crust. Way too much around the edges and it is tough. The dipping sauce is good, but thanks for one little plactic container for two people. When you ask for honey you get about a tsp. Have always had to ask for more.

If you have leftovers the crust becomes inedible upon reheat.

Prefer getting my own soda. I hate sitting around waiting for drink refills at a pizza place.

Thank you for the comments. My name is Adam and I am the owner. AJ's is not a franchise and is completely locally owned so customer feedback is very important. I am glad you enjoyed the music. 99% of the time that is what will be playing. It might not always be the same type of music playing but will always be a little eclectic and never offensive. That particular day we had a group of 40 and they wanted to listen to the playoffs. It was at a low volume because I realize a blaring game is not what everyone wants to listen to while they eat. Im not sure what time you were there so they might have left at that point. Our service is something I like to call at your convenience meaning we want to make you happy while not being overly bothersome. The sodas and water are typically self service. The food and clean up is full service. However keeping the customer happy is my main priority so if you need anything please ask

I've been to AJ's twice for dinner now and both times the food has been fantastic. I left tonight feeling pretty bummed, though, because it was nothing like my first impression a couple weeks ago.

On my first visit my wife and I walked in when it was snowy and not very busy. There was some generic electro-house music playing overhead, dim lights, high stools and tables and I was digging the whole vibe. We ordered a Chicken Bacon Ranch pizza, sat down at a table and were talking about how awesome the place is. Three different waitresses came by to bring us water, the garlic knots we ordered, and more water. Then a few minutes later, amazing pizza showed up and everything was good.

Two weeks go by and I gotta go get some more AJ's; except this time we walk in and things are just pretty bland. Gone is the upbeat house music and it in its place is football on the TV (with barely audible volume). Aside from seeing our waitress once and also a confused waitress who didn't know who to bring an order to, we received no service to speak of. So aside from the still-very-tasty pizza (BBQ Chicken this time), the whole experience was very much like going to a slightly nicer Pizza Hut and paying $10 more.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not here to trash AJ's, because the restaurant seems promising. Kudos to the person that reads this thread and responds to it (even if the official website has no way to contact via email). All I'm asking for is something just a little bit different. I've lived here for 25 years and seen good restaurants stick around and good restaurants disappear and be forgotten; in the end, being consistently helpful, fun and paying attention to detail will be what keeps AJ's several tiers above Topeka's standard fare. Please get this note to a manager so that Topeka doesn't end up with another mediocre pizza place.

Thank you,

Awesome Pizza!

I've been to AJ's several times since it has opened. I've tried several different pizzas, a calzone, the ravioli appetizer, and the cheese bread. Everything was so delicious. The crust is good, the sauces are unbelievable, and the toppings are fresh and abundant. I can't say enough about the food.

The service is great, too. The service on the bar side is great. I've had the male bartender a couple of times and he's funny and helpful. When I got a carryout order, it was fast, and the servers were cheery and happy. I would never order from a chain when I can come here. Thanks for coming to Topeka!

I left Brooklyn,New York over 18 years ago and moved to Topeka. Pizza was a way of life in New York. I have tried every pizza place I could find since I moved trying to find authentic New York Pizza. I finally found it several years ago when I tried AJ'S in Manhattan
, Ks after a KSU game. I was thrilled when I found out AJ'S opened up in Topeka, My wife and I have been there numerous times. Many places in Topeka serve pizza, but only AJ'S serves real New York pizza.

Hope the Specialty pizza's are better.

I thought I give it a try since it's always busy.
I ordered a large pepperoni and when i got home was suprised to find only 20 pepperoni's on a 14 inch pizza. Thought OK might over look that short coming if the pizza tastes great. Well the pizza really had no taste at all ZERO. Thought this was an isolated issue so called and talked to the acting manager and he was real nice and said he remake a pizza with more pepperoni since it did look like they did not put on enough and refund the price so the pizza was at No charge for the issues. In the mean time he brought out a slice to try and while it was better more crisp it still was lacking in taste. I told him to forget the replacement pizza even though it was FREE but said it was almost ready so i wound up taking it home. My wife said the same that there was no taste to the pizza so we are going back to Glory Day's and Larocca's. Hope the specialty pizza's are better.

So glad that AJ Pizza finally has a place in Topeka. My entire family has enjoyed eating at AJ's Pizza in Manhattan for the past several years. We have all eaten at AJ's in Topeka at least 2 times or more and each time can't wait for our next visit. The variety of what can be ordered is fantastic. The food is always exceptional - we just love the crust and the salads are out of this world! Congratulations and we all believe this place will be very successful in Topeka.

11/02/2012 9:23 pm

I love the pizza here. I've been there several times already. However, I sometimes get carryout and order ahead. The problem I face is that if the restaurant is busy, line time to make it to pick up is about 30 minutes (I could literally call in the order from the back of the line, and the order would be ready 10 minutes before I get to the line to pay and pickup).

I am not the only one with this issue. Last time I was in line to get my carryout, 2 others were as well.

I wish they had a carryout only cash register to expedite this process - in part so I can have at least a semi-warm pizza.

My family and I ate there this week for dinner. We ordered the Margherita pizza and a pepperoni. The garlic dipping sauce was really good, but that was about the only thing that was great. The service was alright - our pizza got dropped off at our table and that was the last we saw of wait staff - not sure if that's the way it's supposed to work or not.

All in all, it wasn't great, but it wasn't horrible. We will probably eat there again, but it probably won't be in our regular rotation of favorite eateries.

We have been back twice since our initial visit. The food was consistently good each time. One visit was mid-afternoon, and the other was late night. While the servers were different, the level of service was very good. One time we got salads(what an amazing assortment of salads they have) and a pizza. Both were fresh and great tasting. The late night visit, we had calzones and a salad, and it was great.
I felt a bit guilty the next day when looking at the website for AJ'S. The hours on the Topeka.net site and AJ's are not the same. We had walked it the door 5 minutes before they closed. The employees didn't say a word, but cheerfully served us.

We were out late in the area, and decided to give AJ's a try. As the others have said, you approach a counter and order. There are many choices of both pizza and beer on tap. After you place your order, the cashier gives you a street sign, and your glasses(if you ordered soda) and you find a table. The atmosphere is nice and lighting is subdued. Our tables were clean at the time we sat down, and employees could be seen cleaning off tables.
My wife had a ziti special which she described as heavenly, and I had a create your own calzone. My calzone had me wishing I had ordered 2, so I would have one to warm up today for lunch. We finished things off with 2 black and white cookies for desert.
Great food and we will be back.

Aj's is a much needed admission to the Topeka restaurant scene. My wife and I loved it. The place has charm and a great feel. The pizza was very good. We sat at the bar and it was refreshing to see a true professional behind it. After chatting with the bartender we learned he had recently moved to the area and was a true NYC restaurant pro. All in all our experience was great. The owners seems to have real passion and it shows. We will deff be back.

Pizza, atmosphere, prices. Topeka needed a place like this and it is locally owned. I have eaten at the one in Manhattan several times and this one in Topeka is even better. My hats off to the owner, you have a winning combination great food, good prices and a wonderful atmosphere.

Our pizza was wonky lop-sided with 1-inch crust on half and up to 3" crust on the other half and a little tough (hence the need for dipping sauce?). It didn't look like the picture.

It was OK and since they are newly opened I will give them another try, but I certainly didn't shout this is the only pizza place for me.

They got the pizza to the table quickly, but the tables were dirty and they weren't busy. We wiped ours off with napkins and a couple coming in after us also wiped down their table.

You order as you walk in, carry a street sign to where you want to sit, fill your own sodas and I picked up a box while I was refilling my soda. Other than taking the order, making the pizza and carrying it to the table service doesn't really come into play.

It passed the microwave test except the crust got really tough and even the dog asked for something to dip it in.

So Yummy!

For just opening Aj's is doing great! The service was outstanding. The food was very good, I was just wishing the pizza crust would be a little thinner. I expect that may be in part to being newly opened, and getting the staff trained on how to make the pizzas. The taste was great though! I wish they would open up the other side so you could watch sports, order a pizza, and enjoy a beer! Although you can order a drink from the bar now, so no complaints here! Place seems great for families, date night, or happy hour!
