As the name implies, Almost Home Cafe features downhome cooking -- "Good ol' trucker food." But don't be fooled by the menu and think only truckers enjoy the homecooked meals for which Almost Home Cafe has become known. A visit to the Highway 24 favorite, near Grantville, proves that locals and truckers alike appreciate the friendly atmosphere and delicious food prepared by the owners who opened the location in 2007. If the smoke filled room and loud vulgar customers don't scare you away, you won't return after waiting an abnormally long time for your food that isn't hot or well prepared. Looks and tastes like leftovers. Don't waste your time or money on the soups or pies. Service is slow and makes you feel that you aren't welcome.
hope the need for a new cook was the problem

We visited this place on a early Sunday morning. We waited 45 minutes to be seated and finally be served. This was our first experience here and I am hoping to try it again after they have their new cook hired. I couldn't tell if the wait for our meal was because they were short handed or not.
The food wasn't bad, but mine was awful greasy. The biscuts and gravy were the best I have tried in this area.
Don't let the exterior fool you

We almost passed this place by since there is not a clearly marked sign. Thankfully we had seen the picture on the internet and knew what to look for. When we pulled up, my husband had second thoughts about going in, but we were starving and I didn't feel like driving on to Lawrence or going back to Topeka hungry...I am so glad we went in!
I had the 3-egg omelet with pepperjack cheese, toast and hash browns while my husband enjoyed the biscuits and gravy. The portion size is incredible as is the flavor. The gravy had a large chunks of breakfast sausage and was better seasoned than most. The omelet was tender and tasted great.
A word of warning, the entire restaurant is open and does not have a designated smoking/non-smoking area. If you are sensitive to cigarette smoke, you may want to steer clear...otherwise, it's a great place for breakfast!
