My last review of Blue Moose was almost 2 years ago, so I thought I would give it another try.

Sadly, it was worse than before. I showed up early on a reservation with a group of 12 and was promptly seated at our already set up table 30 minutes before the scheduled reservation. It rapidly deteriorated after that. We got "the new guy", as we were repeatedly told, and he could not deal with our drink orders at all. As our party dribbled in, individuals sat up to 15 minutes without our waiter coming to take their drink order while the rest of us waited that long for ours. About half of the table at a time was all he could deal with. We thought we could outsmart him and order the next round as he served the current round. No go. He said he could not serve us 2 drinks at a time. Editorial note - yes, we were there to drink and we take it seriously.

Our second problem was, as during my last visit, the TV's. It was Thursday night football night and we thought it would be reasonable to request a couple of the many TV's in our area be on the game. We were assured time and again that they would get some changed over. Finally, after we gave up asking, one got switched over halfway thru the third quarter. Two hours and too late. To repeat from my last review, this place is not the sports bar it pretends to be.

Thirdly, the long hair in one of our party's mac and cheese had everyone shoving their dish toward the center of the table saying they were done. Enough said. I will have to say, up until that point my milk braised pork was tasting pretty good.

The last straw, from the time we requested our checks until they finally arrived at our table was over a half hour. At the risk of sounding like a broken record - as with my last review, the checks were so incredibly wrong it was astounding. As before, always incorrect in the restaurant's favor. We always travel in a pack and we know the drill about letting the waiter know up front about dividing the check. Items on the wrong checks, duplicate drinks, incorrect entered, etc. etc. Maybe this is how they stay in business.

The manager tried to deal with it at the end, but it was too late by that point. I just get more infuriated when I am repeatedly told the waiter is new and just learning. My response is "who was the genius that put him unsupervised on a table with a party of 12 if he doesn't know what he's doing?".

I've been at Blue Moose several times for a happy hour kind of thing, but their real problem is the dinner thing. I feel safe in trashing this place on that end because major problems have happened EVERY time I go there. From the 20 minute spread in serving each of our entrees to the "I brought you this beer because we were out of what you wanted, you'll really like it", and everything in between indicates that there are management issues that are making Moose patrons Blue.

Brunch was good today, but they had a difficult time keeping the popular things on the line. We had to wait 10+ minutes for bacon, salmon, and waffles. The food quality was really good, so we'll give it another chance.

Always a favorite!

My friends and I love Blue Moose. It's become our new favorite place to go during the week with all of the great specials. I've been to the brunch a couple times when out of town family has visited and it was great when we went. Would definitely recommend this place to a friend looking for fun atmoshphere and great food! It's unlike anything else in Topeka and the crowd here is always a little classier than some other places that I've been in Topeka.

Went for brunch today and disappointed in quality and quantity of food. We arrived 11:15 and all the food was cold and in short supply. The only thing decent was the finger food and fruit. When we went back for seconds a table wait person assumed we had left and cleaned the table off! We came back to bare table and had to start over again. Won't be back for this brunch.

Just had dinner at Blue Moose. The hubs had the special of the evening, which was a pork steak with brandied apples and roasted new potatoes. I had the braised short ribs. This was the most tender beef, ever!! The pork steak and brandied apples were succulent!!

The drinks we ordered were from the menu on the table and were mixed to perfection.

We even had dessert, chocolate torte. It was so tasty, but not heavy.

The service was amazing. Our server was friendly, without smothering but kept on top of everything.

Yummm! Just tried the shrimp wontons for the first time last night and they were awesome! The nachos are always great too, a table of 7 of us got two orders and it was nice to have an appetizer big enough to not need one for each person. Better than ever!

I love this place!!

The blue moose is awesome. They have great lunch specials during the week and great drink specials particularly on Thursday nights. I really love the varied menu. It offers a lot of moderately priced items with several lower priced items for those that don't want to spend as much. I have loved everything that I have tried there. The Jammin Salmon is terrific but I think my favorite is Sunday brunch it is the best in town. The blue moose is upscale without being overpriced and I have always gotten great service there. Topeka really needed a place like this plus it is primarily locally owned which is a huge plus for me over the chains that dominate Wanamaker some of which are ok but I really like that they are local.

Went to Blue Moose today for the brunch buffet.

The food on the buffet was hot and fresh!! The omelette station was scrumptious!!

The Eggs Benedict are part of the buffet but have to be asked for separately so they are served fresher than fresh. (same with the French Toast)

If you want a quality brunch buffet head to The Blue Moose. It is definitely worth the price, food is fresh and not boxed bagged or canned.

Stopped by last evening for dinner on the patio. Our server, Brian, was less than attentive. It took quite a while before we were served. While taking our drink orders, one of our party also requested a glass a water with the beverage. He stated that he would bring water for everyone. He did not. When the food arrived it was as advertised. No surprises here. A bit above average for quality. However, no effort was made to refill the water glasses. The emphasis seemed to be on selling dessert. Finally, when the bills came, they were inaccurate.
If you are in a hurry, I would not recommend this place. But, if you have time to enjoy patio seating, this is a nice setting and the food was good. I hope the service is both quicker and more attentive next time.

Awesome experience every time!

A close friend introduced us to the "Moose" last fall and have enjoyed returning since. We usually sit at the bar where the service and friendly staff are second to none. Shane, Nick and Patrick make you feel welcome and pampered. When I am meeting anyone in Topeka I ALWAYS suggest we go to the "Moose" because I know the above mentioned will take care of us with suggestions on what meals/drinks to try. They are knowledgable about their menu and have always treated my guests, friends and family with respect and the best service. I will continue to go to the "Moose" as long as I walk away feeling the way I have so far. I truly enjoy the experience of going to the "Moose".

Ate there last week, once was enough. For an 'upscale' restaurant, they were very slow, our waiter was quite arrogant but couldn't deliver the goods (its better to write down the orders rather than forgetting someone's order by trying to think you are capable of remembering multi-orders from several different tables at once). One of our party had food delayed as they said it fell on the floor coming out of oven, while they let another party just sit with no food until we finally had to ask for it (hence the forgotten order)..and it was hard to get service as the waiter rarely came back to the table. Once food was delivered and we had to ask for condiments it took forever to get simple ketchup and bbq sauce, which what did come out posing as bbq was the most awful tasting excuse for bbq ever, that it was not edible. Waiter took several attempts at figuring out tickets for our table (simple, 3 couples, which he was told up front at least twice). Food=mediocore; Service=non-existent.

I am an employee at the Blue Moose, and I have to say that I absolutely LOVE working there! It is one of the best, most fun and fabulous places that I have ever worked at. And no, I am not writing this "great review" because my managers "encourages" us to write them (as that "employee" comment said). That is untrue! The staff AND the managers are great and so is the food. Don't listen to the negative comments that are being said, because most likely, those negative comments are from immature, fired employees who are mad because they got fired for their own mistakes OR they are other restaurants who are trying to run the Blue Moose down. BUT, like every restaurant in the world, staff at the Blue Moose will make mistakes. But the managers and the staff there will go the extra mile for the customer in order to fix the problem because they care about the guests. Don't listen to those stupid, negative comments. The Blue Moose is definitely a place to hang out and have fun with family and friends, and to eat delicious food as well!

Went to Blue Moose the first time tonight with a group of girls. Not only was the food simply fantastic, the staff treated us like we were the center of their world.

It was very refreshing to go to a restaurant that fixed food from scratch. Everything tasted fresh, their menu is unique.

Don't mind the construction at 29th & Wanamaker, this place is definitely worth it! (Besides, when isn't Wanamaker under construction.)

I have now found my new "go to" place!!!

Thank you Blue Moose for being way above average.

First and foremost, it is sad that a disgruntled ex-employee has to air his/her dirty laundry in this format. If you don't know how to deal with customers, you are in the wrong line of work. Anybody can have a good memory and test well, but if you don't have customer service skills, get out, that is not a teachable skill. You either have it or you don't.

Now, on to more important things, The Blue Moose!! My husband and I dined there on a much needed date night. The food was amazing! The young server (believe it was Scott)was attentive. He took our order, explained different items to us, checked back with us without badgering us.

We will DEFINIELY go back!!

I worked at blue moose for 8 months, and 8 months I watched the most unorganized management, first off training is horrible, you take tons and tons of tests of the menu and bar, which is fine but out of all that training they don't actually teach you to waitress or talk to customers so after you have the menu memorized they throw you out on the floor, you watch your managers bicker all the time and treat you like you are scum, there are days when we where dead and they would send you home early, then if it got busy they would call you right back in and if you couldn't make it back they would say "well I guess you really dont want your job" or they would send you home unpaid but ask you stay close incase it got busy.
Walking back to the dish washer or the walk in cooler you would often find employees making out on the clock. If a waitress has a big table you lose your tables to go help her then tips are never split, you cannot eat food while you are there you have to leave change clothes then come back to even eat. you buy all your over priced uniforms, The last restaurant I worked at I was there for 3 years and came to blue moose because they made it sound amazing to work for, but I have dreaded being involved with that company, and as for the great reviews on the food and service, they encourage their employees to get on here and right great reviews which is what most of them are is employees writing reviews. Blue moose may have good food, but working there was nothing but a nightmare and that is why turn over is so high and service is not always so great

Left us hoping for a Blue Moose in Manhattan sometime soon. The atmosphere is great, love the TV's. Hi livybk-
I'm the daughter of hawk1 that you so lovingly insinuated was needy and incapable of working hard. Let me be clear--at the time I was working weekends at Blue Moose I had 4 part time jobs AND was going to college full time. I quit because of the General Manager calling all of the servers explicit names, the near meltdown one manager had when they accused the servers of being thieves, being hung up on by a manager when I called in because I twisted me knee, finding out that two of the servers had intercourse in the KITCHEN and that the GM knew, and being fed up with my coworkers leaving without doing there side-work and I would stay to clean it all up. So next time you go accusing someone of being a spoiled brat, maybe you should think of what situation they may be in. The night I quit I left in tears and the next day I received FIVE phone calls asking me to come back to work. I have NEVER quit a job without putting my two weeks in, so if you really want to go waste your money, the KC Hopps corporation is a real gem. Thanks for your insight, livybk. Obviously you know what you're talking about. It's only a matter of time before your niece sees the place for what it really is. Also, i was with the restaurant from the beginning if that says anything at all.

I have been in to Blue Moose about six times in the last month, and I have to say they are nicely recovering from the slump they were experiencing a few months ago. There are a ton of new faces on the floor, and they're not all amazing servers, but the two problems I have had (cold Mac-n-Cheese, wrong plate) were promptly addressed and a manager personally apologized. The prices are still steep, but this is a great restaurant to have in Topeka and I don't mind the drive across town now that they're recovering from whatever was going on during the spring.

Also, at least one person at your table should try the special. No matter what it is. I had the Cajun something-or-other last week and it was probably the best food they've ever served.

Better now than ever!

Oh hawk1 that must explain why there are so many people that ARE still there from when they opened. Good luck to your daughter on finding a job that caters to her every want and need. Maybe kids these days should appreciate a paying job vs whining to mom and dad when things don't go their way. I have an interest because we've loved the place since it opened and my niece got on there and has had nothing but good things to say so we love it even more now!

what they want about the food, price and/or service, but if there was a contest for the "best bartender" in town, the Blue Moose's would get my vote hands down. Only know him by the monicker "Nick", as not sure of his full name, but he is friendly, outgoing, fast, efficient, and has a great personality. This is what brings me in time after time. Management has a true gem working for them. They lose him, it's all over.

Reply to Sarahcrum on where the regular staff is. My daughter worked there from the opening until recently. I'm going to stand up for her because she's a hard worker. Her fiance worked there for a while, until they refused to work with him on his mandatory schedule at WU, so he had to quit. My daughter finally quit a few weeks ago because frankly, the management treats them like crap there. They refuse to work around their schedules and are difficult at best to work for. She finally had her fill and quit, only to have several phone calls later asking her to return. Goodbye Blue Moose, she had enough of your treatment. So just know that the "regular" staff are all gone because this place isn't good to work for.

My husband and I have gone to the Blue Moose many times since it has opened and we've never left there unsatisfied. Their servers are always cordial, helpful and attentive and the managers are the same. I've never had bad food there. I've tried many things, including the fungus and fromage pizza, fig and prosciutto pizza, turkey burger, chicken nachos, artichoke bisque, fish and chips, and lobster mac and cheese among others. They are quality through and through. The lemon caper aioli with the fish is amazing and the artichoke bisque is divine! My husband and I ate there just the other night and were very pleased with our service. I ordered the turkey burger and he ordered the special, a stuffed chicken over rice pilaf, which he loved. My turkey burger was a tad overseasoned, a little overdone and they skimped on the goat cheese (at least compared to other times I've been there) and when the waitress asked us how everything was, I was honest with her. She asked if I wanted anything replaced and I said no, I'd eaten it, so it wasn't a big deal. The manager came over 2 minutes later and asked again if there was anything they could do. I told them no, I just wanted to let them know so they could tell the chef to have a lighter hand with the salt in future. They took 1/2 off my meal! I even told them they didn't need to do that and they waved it off, saying they appreciated my honesty. If that isn't service, I don't know what it is! We will return again and again...so good and they serve awesome beer, including Ad Astra ale from Free State, yum! Thanks for another exceptional dinner Blue Moose-ites!

Omelet and waffle station with all the additions you can think of. Then they have delicious lunch items to choose from. I love their hummus and was delighted to see it as an option on the buffet. Thank you KC for finally bringing a great restaurant to Topeka. Me and my family and my business partners have been to this restaurant at least twice a week and let me tell you the service and food get better with every visit. When the restaurant first opened it was rocky but that is to be expected with a new restaurant and staff. I have seen this business grow from a bunch of inexperienced servers to a great group of people. They have finally gotten rid of the servers that didnt look good and have a great looking, service orientated staff. Every visit seems to get better. Went to dinner there Saturday and the place was packed and every where you looked people had smiles on there faces and were having fun. Food was great our server and the others that said hi and asked how we were doing were all great. Keep up the great work Blue Moose your doing a great job and keep hiring those smiling friendly people you finally have!!

My family and I have have been going to the Blue Moose since their first soft opening. We have been there at least 12 times in the last 4 months and only once did we ever have a non-ideal experience. We had ordered and one of our plates came out wrong, a manager promptly came to the table and apologized and got our order fixed and we had the new plate within 5 minutes. Sometimes it seems as though it only gets better as we try new things. If anyone had a negative experience there I would wonder if they asked for a manager or expressed that while they were there vs. waiting to bash the place on a website. There are several of the same people that have been there since they started that know us by name now when we go in. We always know we'll have a good time when we go there and the kids just love the place. They always love seeing the blue moose sign when we pull in! Topeka has needed someplace like this for a long time and we are so greatful they are here.

My family and I used to enjoy this "upscale" restaurant. We even were members of the guests rewards program they push so hard. We went in a couple times a week at least and if any of you have ever been here you know that the money we spent was not pocket change. At first we enjoyed going and even the staff was great to our kids. Hosted many parties here and even booked the banquet room a couple times. The last few times we were in there the "regular" staff that knew us by name and stopped to visit was no longer there. I realize that like every new place staff comes and goes but there are hardly any faces we know. Its only been not even 4 months and where are all the good staff? You know the ones who care we are there, treat us like family, more so appriciate out business? Im sorry but that says alot. Those people made this place and were the reason we continued to come in. As you all know there are many and I mean many restaurants in Topeka which we have since started going to. The food has really went down hill fast and im also guessing lack of caring cooks or help in the back. Food looks great on your pictures but never once has it came to table as you show it. And truth be told I would much rather get average food and amazing serice which is not the case. Your staff is a bunch of kids whom dont care about the people coming in who by the way pay their wages. They only want to make a few bucks and dont care about quality or people. My family and kids dont care if the person waiting on us is some 20 year old girl with no personality and no work ethic!! Get your staff back or this place will sink!! Also might hint why the business has died alot in last month or less. There is hardly ever a wait and no one begging to get in the door. But hey your probly getting a paycheck which is all these corporations care about!! So note to all you caring to read this...Save your money and temper go to McDonalds across the road. Better service and way better prices for what you get!! Maybe focus more on keeping the staff who keep your business then worring about new specials that nobody is gonna buy!! By the way maybe you should also get your firepits fixed, funny the Brickoven never had trouble with them, but then again they also somehow kept the same staff for ever!!! Maybe your priorites need to be figured out....Word of mouth travels fast!!

I have commented previously about the Blue Moose, but after going to the Sunday Brunch I feel compelled to add another post.

Sunday brunch was AMAZING! The variety of foods offered ranged from French Toast to Fried Chicken and everything in between. The food was incredible. I went back 3 times in order to try everything that struck my fancy. And at no time did they run out of food, they did however have a hard time keeping up with the demand for plates! Guaranteed you won't leave hungry.

My favorites were: French Toast, Sausage Links, Biscuits and Gravy, Custom Omlete, Mashed Potatoes, Fried Chicken, Spinach Artichoke Dip, Orange Muffins, Cheesecake Bites and the standout above all others favorite: Mac & Cheese.

Saw lots of families and groups enjoying themselves.

The only thing I wasn't head-over-heels for was my bloody mary, not bad, but nothing special.

Do you have to be young to like this place?

The good:

The food here is pretty good and not priced too badly. I've had the milk-braised pork, Cuban sandwich, turkey burger and mac & cheese. All were worth ordering. The appetizer menu is a little sparse. The beer is overpriced, unless you're there on Thursday. On Thursday it's a good deal, but good luck getting in, especially if you just want to sit at the bar. The tap beer selection is decent, with some good micro-brews and is not just limited to the manufactured beer segment.

The bad:

The bar area is way too small. I've not eaten in the regular dining area, but my impression is that it's probably not to everybody's liking due to the rambunctious, overflowing bar area. I've been here half a dozen times on weekday evenings and the bar is always overflowing. Some of the bartenders are good and some (one in particular) who are not (and a jerk to boot). The servers in the bar area can be overwhelmed at times and we've repeatedly had empty glasses for way too long (in the 15 minute plus range) before getting the next round. My major complaint is that every time I've been here (6 for 6), my bill has been wrong. And it's never in my favor. It's been wrong anywhere from $3.00 to $42.00. The $42 error was on a bill that ended up at $38! Another complaint is that I had the impression from pre-opening chatter that this was a sports bar. Not really. Lots of TV's (with no sound), but you're just as likely to end up watching the soccer or golf channel instead of the big game.

Conclusion:

For food and drink, the Moose is worth a try - good food and nice atmosphere. To watch the big game go elsewhere. The fact that this place is so busy is testimonial to how Topeka is starving for this type of establishment. However, in my experience, the average Topekan will not wait even 2 minutes for a table, so, if you're an average Topekan, go during non-peak times.

Delicious!

I thought the food, atmosphere and service was great! We did wait a while for a table, due to it being a Friday night. Went to the bar for drinks while we waited and had prompt refills on our beers! The milk braised pork was delicious and unlike anything I've ever had. The server was very friendly and made the experience very enjoyable. We signed up for a Guest Reward card and has proven to be a great deal (you get 1/2 price apps). We are so happy the Moose came to Topeka and look forward to going back often.

Interesting...

It's interesting some "dude" is telling people who have actually eaten at Blue Moose they know nothing, yet hadn't even eaten there when making his comment. Could you possibly be any more arrogant?

Let me be the first to say - you know nothing!

I will be eating at the Blue Moose tonight, for the first time. I will then give you an honest report. Don't waste your time reading any other comments. I will get back to you soon.

To the Negative Reviewers

I honestly don't understand the people who say the portion sizes are small. Are you kidding me? Yes, their prices are a little higher than other restaurants' prices, but it's an upscale restaurant and bar. The food is prepared from scratch and they use ingredients that many other restaurants don't use, so what do you expect? Every time I've eaten there, I've had to make at least two meals out of what I ordered. Eating one of their appetizers is certainly enough to fill me up.

And to the people who criticize the waitstaff, have you ever had a new job and you didn't know everything about it right off the bat? If you were starting out as a server at a new restaurant, along with being in an environment that is loud, chaotic, and filled with people, wouldn't you be prone to make a few mistakes? Everyone makes mistakes in new jobs, so try to suppress your arrogance and get over it. The employees at Blue Moose had to cram in a lot of training in a short period of time, much of it rushed and incomplete. People learn and get better as time goes by, and to be cliched, practice makes perfect.

I must also say to the person who posted more than one negative comment that it's rather unfair to label the waitstaff as "pushy." They are required to talk to the guests about the Guest Rewards program along with suggesting drinks, appetizers, and desserts. It's all a part of business and I highly doubt anyone has put a gun to your head to buy anything, so stop complaining.

With any new business, there are always going to be kinks to iron out, but things will improve. Don't be so quick to be negative about it and just give it a chance.

Multiple negative reviews from the same people, interesting.

Personally, I think the blue moose does it right. I enjoy the inside decor, the different types of food I've had have been great, and I truly don't undersand any of the negative reviews.

The beer choice is excellent if you are a beer fan, the food was great the 3 times I've been to the Topeka location (and I live a block away from the Prairie Village location). Its not going to be an Iron Chef restaurant, but it is a classy restaurant, thats very upscale for the Topeka area. All the typical negative bashing happens.

Fine dining and Topeka rarely go together, with few exceptions (The Rowhouse comes to mind), and I miss the days of eating good food downtown (I loved Grazi's! Paisano's satisfies that though). If you want real fine dining you are forced to go to Kansas City, but the Blue Moose does an excellent job of bringing that to you.

One sentence reviews or complainin about how your belt wasn't fitting properly after a $20 entre is laughable. Just because you aren't in a food coma doesn't mean you had a bad dining experience. I'd recommend sticking to the dollar menu for that route. I've had the salmon, the steak, and pizza, and haven't been disappointed at either of them. The hummus or spinach artichoke dip have been fantastic appetizers, and I hope Topeka keeps giving new restaurants a choice, and stops pretending the Olive Garden is a good dining experience.

When I'm in Topeka, I make it a point to swing by and have a beer here.
