The Burger Stand opened on Sept. 8, 2011.

Robert Krause started one of Topeka's trendiest eateries — New City Cafe — and now his newest creation, The Burger Stand, is open Topeka's College Hill district.

With gourmet burgers and fries — including delectable truffle fries — The Burger Stand will raise the ante on the gourmet burger market in Topeka. According to Krause, besides great food, The Burger Stand will feature two bars as well as pool and ping pong tables.

The Burger Stand boasts seating for 270 inside with room for another 40-50 on the outdoor patio.

In addition to great food, they also have more than a dozen craft beers on tap.

and I won't go back. The burger was good but the fries came out cold! We ordered two different types and for that kind of money it all should have been stellar. If I come to this part of town I will stick with my new favorite...BOCA CAFE!!

I was very excited to finally visit the Burger Stand. I appreciate a good burger and had heard good things. We arrived early on a Friday evening, before there was even much of line. We stood around for a little bit, and then seated ourselves. Sat again for a couple of minutes, then went and grabbed menus ourselves from the bar. Husband went and placed our order and got our drinks. We sat within site of the pick-up window at the kitchen and could see when our order was ready, just waited for our name to be called. I watched our order sit there under the heat lamps for a good 5 minutes. The burgers and fries were ready, but the onion rings were not.

Personally, not a fan of the truffle fries. The cajun fries were a little too spicy (and we love spicy). Husband and I both ordered the smoke burger. The burger meat was alright. I think I enjoyed the flavor of the burger more than anything. My toddler had the chicken fingers. A total of $40 for two burgers, two orders of fries, two drinks, one order of onion rings, and one chicken basket.

The thing was, the entire time we were there, not one worker ever came to our table. I saw workers walking around and was curious as to what they could have been doing. They certainly weren't helping tables. So a $40 meal that didn't include a tip for burgers that were just alright. I could have spent my money better elsewhere. I don't really care to go back, but my husband wants to give it another shot.

I was so impressed with my recent trip to the burger stand. I ordered the Greek burger. Feta cheese, sun dried tomatoes, olive tapenade, and local greens top a made to order patty, and a butter toasted bun rounds out this creation of magnificence. Not only are the burgers delicious, but to pair them with truffle fries is a must! The staff is super friendly, super helpful, and always greet you with a smile. I will definitely be going back to try a few different menu items and to enjoy a hip and welcoming environment.

Food and service have slowly gotten worse- I will not be back after today.

I have been to The Burger Stand about 10+ times in the last 6 months, usually for lunch with a potential customer or with a few friends/family (because I used to brag about the place)
Something has changed- It was great....It is not anymore.

The last time I went in was with my son- we waited 45 minutes for our food- (yes I complained- with only an apology and some hair flipping) We both ordered "KOBE" burgers and Truffle fries- Very plain nothing special. Could have got a better Burger and fries at Burger King for about $7 less.

Today (11/11/12) Took a friend there, I was hoping things had improved. I spent $30+ dollars (with tip) on 2 Classic's 2 truffle fries and 2 drinks. The food was not good- The fries over cooked and sprinkled with "Always Save" Parmesan cheese- (Or so it tasted) The burger was mediocre..... I will not be back. We could have got steaks that were good anywhere else.

Terrible service

My friends and I went in on Thursday November 8 and saw signs posted on the doors as well as the walls stating $1.25 bottles Thursday 10-midnight for happy hr specials. We were there at 10;15 on the bar side and the bartender said they have no specials of that. My friends took the sign up to him off the wall and he said I guess that's only good on the other side. We went to the other side and the girl bartending over there was amazing. Gave us the beers for $1.25. One of my friends proceeded to buy a makers and coke an the bartender on the bar side true to talk him out of it. He said are you sure you want that and not something cheaper?! He proceeded to do this 3xs before he poored the drink. Since when do you not want to make money for the place you're working?! The male bartender on the bar side was completely rude, unexperienced, and obviously not caring about making the business money. Needless to say the amazing girl bartender, I think gabby, on the other side knew the drink specials and definitely took care of us even if she had to walk to the bar side. We definitely took care of her...

Group of three ate there tonight. My colleagues both had turkey burgers and one of them proclaimed it the best one she had ever had. I tried the Smoke burger and other than the fact that it was a bit undercooked, the flavor was excellent. This place continues to surpass expectations.

I've been here several times now and had a variety of burgers and other sandwiches and fries. Oh, I love those fries, especially the sweet potato ones. Watch for their specials too; I had a lamb burger once that was excellent.

I do love the food, but...if you go on a weekend night, prepare for a very long wait between entering the building and eating. If there is much of a line at all, be aware that not only will you wait in that line to order, pay and try to find a place to sit, but you will also have a long wait time to get your food.

I appreciate that my food is not cooked until I order it (and beyond) but sometimes that wait has been a problem.

So, I recommend that if you can't do a long wait, don't go on the weekends. Go enjoy it during the week when it's much less crowded and much less full of loud people who like to drink as much as they like to eat. Go for lunch too!

Overall, one of my new favorite places in Topeka, for sure, and thanks to the owners for bringing it here!

The Burger Stand has the most delicious burgers I have ever tasted. I've tried several of them, and they are all wonderful. They have really great vegetarian options, and they also cater to dieters by offering to turn any burger into a salad. The salads come with delicious pickled vegetables, and they have a blue cheese viniagrette that is to die for. The sides are also very good, but I'm not a fan of the pickles. I like dill pickles, and spicy dill is fine. These ones just don't suit me. I've never had a really long wait, probably 15 minutes max. I definitely don't mind because I know it gets cooked when I order it. It's more expensive but definitely worth it. Everyone that works there is really nice!!

My wife and I went to The Burger Stand for lunch today (Saturday 02-11-12). It was our first visit. Our friends told us "it is pricey and poor service due to extra long wait for the food". Well, our warning did not do it justice. We ordered at 12;15 and got our food at 1:20. I had asked the waitress where our order was in line and she told me were only four out. I waited at the window and honestly watched at least 15 orders go out ahead our ours. I even asked the cook preparing the food about our order and he said "I am preparing it now". Well, you guessed it, he filled five orders before ours and I was standing at the window. Probably will not make it back, for a long, long, long time, if ever. Two burgers, fries and pop $28.03. I say Very Pricey.

I had lunch at the one in Lawrence this summer, and it was fantastic! So I was really excited when I found out they were opening one in Topeka. In my opinion it is a quality place. I love it! I now go there every other week, or so. The staff is friendly, helpful, and engaging. The atmosphere is pretty hip, yet laid back. And the food is awesome!!
I started out with the smoke burger (with truffle fries) the first couple of times I went the(It's a good burger to start your Burger Stand experience with.). Then I tried the Kobe burger with truffle fries (seriously, the truffle fries are AWESOME!! Especially with coco-chipotle ketchup, the parmesan aioli, or guajillo dip), which is my new favorite. I have tried a couple of their specials: The Buffalo Burger, which had jalapenos and pepper jack cheese, and the Veal Burger with blood orange marmalade-- they were both great! Several of my friends have tried, and really enjoyed, the Greek Burger, a hot dog (I can't remember which one), and the Black Bean Burger. The sweet potato fries are pretty yummy, especially with the roasted marshmallow dip.
As far as entertainment goes: They feature karaoke on Friday nights. The Heartland Jazz Trio played there a several weeks ago. And The Pong Bar is a great place to go hang out with friends, play some pool or ping pong, and have a couple of drinks.
All in all, I think this place is wonderful, and I do hope they thrive in Topeka!! It's nice to see the College Hill area finally have some life to it!

Group of four for dinner last night: drinks good, although dirty martini ordered on the rocks was delivered up in a martini glass (bartender said she shook it on the rocks--um, no).
ordered 2 Classics, one with cheese, one without, Smoke Burger & Kobe Burger; burgers all excellent and prepared to specification. Also ordered a basket of duck fat fries, and sides of onion rings and regular fries. Prospectively, one basket of fries will suffice for the table. Fries good, although a bit extra crispy; onion rings were terrible--soggy, tepid and greasy. Oil clearly not hot enough. Nice atmosphere though, not too noisy or crowded on a Thursday evening from 6:00 to 7:00 something, and the burgers are reliably delicious.

Wish I had read these reviews before I ordered the Black and Blue. It was gross. The blue cheese tasted like old feta cheese.

Might go back and try the Smoke Burger. It seems to get good reviews.

Truffle fries were OK. Seemed somewhat overcooked. Maybe just not a good day.

Top 5 Restaurants in Topeka

This restaurant is an amazing breath of fresh air in Topeka. Ok - sure - it is a burger joint. But it is surely one of the best burger joints in the Midwest.

Their origins are from Lawrence and from the gourmet world. But Robert and Molly Krause have opened up a gourmet version of a restaurant in Topeka. And everyone should be going.

This was my second visit to The Burger Stand. And each and every time I come back to Kansas, I will be sure to visit.

This visit, we had the Black and Blue Burger - an thick medium are burger, loaded with creamy blue cheese. We tried the Smoke burger - with great smoked bacon and all the fixing.

While the burgers are good - they also have taken the time to master French fries. You can try the regular or the duck fat fries, but my suggestions are the sweet potato fries - and the truffle fries. They have learned either a double or triple cooking method - and so you get fluffy - yet crunch and perfectly done fries. You can order a "side" for only $2 or a basket for slightly more. Your body tells you that you should not each them all - but trust me, you won't be able to help yourself.

They have a great selection of local and national beers. They are branching out to hot dogs and more pub style food. It is a great place, and one of the best places in Topeka for quality food.

Just ok

Ate here for the first time on Saturday with an out of town relative. A little pricey, but comparable to what we would have paid at someplace like Red Robin or Applebees. I had the Smoke burger and it was very very tasty. My sister had the Black and Blue. It was okay, but the chutney on it was more like a puree and needed more spice or flavor. The major complaint we had about the burgers was the level of doneness. I ordered mine medium and it was closer to well done. My sister ordered hers medium well and it was bordering on being too rare for even me. I've had numerous people rave about the truffle fries, so we ordered a basket to share. Way too overpriced and just not that good. The final complaint we both had was the pickle spears that came with the burgers. They were probably the worst tasting pickles either of us had ever had a a restaurant. Soggy, not crisp and just not a good pickle taste. Overall it was ok. I will eat there again if the situation arises, but I won't go out of my way either, and it's certainly not good enough to wait in line like I've heard you have to on some occasions.

Ate here for the first time on Sunday. The young woman that took our order was helpful and friendly. Considering it wasn't very busy the tables were dirty and many needed cleaning. However, great building.

My husband and I each got the meatball sub special. It was Ok, but I'm not sure I wouldn't have liked Subway or most any other chain more.

My son, a blue cheese lover his whole life, got the Black and Blue Burger. He hated it. The blue cheese granny smith chutney was completely overpowering. He scraped it off as much as possible and ate about half the burger. He said he might return, but would stick with the Classic.Getting the chutney on the side might have helped, but I don't know as it was really strong.

The fries were the fun part of the experience. We tried the sweet potato fries and truffle fries and sampled all the dipping sauces. They were good, but probably not good enough to draw us back again. We're just not gourmet burger people. The experience wasn't worth the cost.

but as a college student, I can't afford to take a date. I tried it the other day, and got their standard burger and onion rings. Great dipping sauce with the rings, although the rings could have been better drained, as my fingers got greasy. Burger was good also. However, that being said, the bill came to just under $12, without drink or tip. I can't afford to spend 12 bucks on a burger and rings, no matter how good. If I gave a tip (I was cheap) and got a beer, I would have had to use my credit card, and pay later. Sorry, guys, you have a great product, just too rich for my student blood.

Went at lunch time and had the smoke burger and sweet potato fries. Everything was to perfection. Order took probably 10 mins. at tops. Wait staff is all very helpful. Unique interior with not too loud background music and also outside seating. The only thing is they need to have more than one person taking orders. The line was at least 20 deep and not moving very quickly. Not sure why they do not recognize this but it's pretty obvious they need to get people's orders must quicker. It'll be interesting to see if they can keep up the brisk pace. It's still brand new and everybody will try it once. I am not one to do many burgers but if you are into them this is a good place. Plus, the total tab was $11 which isn't that bag considering the quanity of food.

Finally!

I. Am. In. Love.

This place has it all: a great space, a great vibe, and great staff. Oh, and did I mention the FOOD?

The Smoke Burger is perfection. The crisp bacon adds texture and crunch, and the chipotle ketchup adds just the right amount of kick. So far, it's second only to the Fire Burger. The avocado on mine was perfectly ripe, adding color and just the right amount of creaminess to cut through the habanero jam. Add a little of the cherry-pepper ketchup (the closest thing they have to "regular" ketchup), and you have a perfect burger.

But wait. It gets better.

Two words for you, people: Truffle. Fries. After three visits, I dream about these babies. Tossed with parmesan cheese and truffle oil, they're salty and savory and creamy and crispy all at the same time. Dip 'em in the aioli they serve along side, and you'll never be satisfied with anything less.

I've heard a few people complain that the burgers are undercooked, but the guy who took my order made sure to let me know the burgers are cooked to medium unless requested otherwise. Mine was cooked perfectly - still pink in the middle, but with a substantial mouth feel. My girlfriend ordered hers medium-well, and the kitchen was happy to oblige.

Thanks to the Krauses for bringing this burgery-goodness to Topeka, and especially for locating it somewhere OTHER than the Wanamaker Corridor. After three visits, I am officially hooked.

Place is great

Went last night just a little before 5pm and got right in ordered food and had it with in 10minutes of ordering. Just like any place its still new, and lots of people are trying it out so things may be slower than they will be once staff is fully trained and you dont have the newness as much.

Friend had a Corndog and it was pretty big and he enjoyed it. My girl had a Smoke burger and it was a little undercooked brought it up to the window and the cooks made her a new one that was ready to go in under 5 minutes with no complaints at all.

I had the Cobbler and it was good, needed some crunch but other than that i really enjoyed it.

Place gives a nice place for a good burger in town and if you want to drink or be at a bar also it has that also. The price is a little expensive but its worth it. About the same price as Red Robin but with better product and much quieter and less kids

I took my family there this week. We split a Kobe burger and my son had the Smoke burger. Some of the best hamburgers we ever had! Personally, Kobe beef in a hambuger is overrated. The texture and taste of the Smoke burger was one of the best burgers I have ever had in my life - IMHO.

We also had the duck fat fries, tofu fries, and truffle fries. The tofu fries were just to try something new and they were OK. Duck fat fries did not live up to the hype - soggy and greasy but still very good. The truffle fries were OMG! Best fries that I have ever ate, hands down. Dipping sauces rocked! The only thing that takes away from the sauce experience was one of the cooks made a snippy remark about trying one of each of the sauces. They were in little bitty sample cups - maybe a teaspoon each - and by god, as long as we waited (see next paragraph) we were going to try all of them.

My only gripe was the wait. There was quite a line when we went in. We asked how long it would be to get our food? The owner said "[from this spot, you'll be tasting our wonderful burgers in 30 minutes]." We were debating going somewhere else but my family and I were OK with 30 minutes. It took 20-25 minutes to get to the register. I placed my order and was then told we would be our food in another 30 minutes. I had already paid so I had no choice but to wait. I must have made a disgruntled face because the owner followed us to the back and comp'd us a couple of games of pool. It was another 40-45 minutes until we got our food.

Yes it was very good. Hands down. But I feel that we were mislead. Will I eat there again? Probably, but not definitely. $30+ for 2 burgers, 3 sodas, and 3 fries? We'll see.

I do wish them all the success in the world. Just be honest about the wait times is my only suggestion.

Burgers,Dogs, Brats, Salad and libations

I actually ate there twice in one day. The brat was different good, than say your shorter plumper fattier kind that I grill with. I got two, ate just the brats and took the buns home for the dogs for a smart snack. The custom mustard did the trick.

I had the black and blue burger later the night, awesome, with a side of fries and a Dr. Pepper. My wife wasn't impressed with the price. But, they never said they were cheap. I can see going there once in a while for a burger.

I didn't sample the libations. However I talked to the manager of the bar. They do have representation of WU, KU and KSU beers. Blind Tiger, Freestate and Tallgrass are represented there. They have stronger stuff too. I could drop by and sample a new beer or an old one. Then play some ping pong, pool, foosball in the Pong Bar that is around from the main restaurant part.
