El Maguey

El Maguey is the first Topeka franchise of a regional restaurant chain with several locations in the Kansas City area and Missouri. Owners Juan Jasso and Martin Leon, who also owns Las Fuentes on Topeka Boulevard, said the restaurant specializes in a wide variety of familiar Mexican dishes with traditional flavors and ingredients.

El Taquito Express

5141 S.W. 29th, Topeka

Opened in January 2013, El Taquito Express is a small carryout/drive thru eatery near S.W. 29th and Fairlawn.

Open at 6:30 a.m., El Taquito is one of the few Mexican restaurants in Topeka where you can get breakfast burritos including pork, chorizo, and sausage and bacon.

For lunch or dinner try one of the authentic tacos — Tacos de Barbacoa or Tacos de Cochita Pibil are favorites — or try the delicious Envueltos de Mole (a rolled corn tortilla dipped in mole and stuffed with chicken) among a variety of other fresh and unique dishes.



Express Japan

1801 S.W. Wanamaker, Topeka

Located between Subway and Chick-Fil-A in the food court inside West Ridge Mall, Express Japan opened early in 2010 and features, as you'd expect, Japanese cuisine. If you love teriyaki you're in the right place as Express Japan offers chicken, beef, shrimp, chicken & shrimp, chicken & beef and tofu varieties. Falling Water Grille and Lounge

1717 S.W. Topeka Blvd., Topeka

This small, upscale restaurant with about 25 tables can be found in the Capitol Plaza Hotel, featuring an open-air atmosphere where you can watch the kitchen crew work its magic. A breakfast and lunch buffet compliment the restaurant's eclectic menu. The customers range from hotel guests to Topeka's movers and shakers.

Breakfast is served from 6 - 11 a.m., lunch from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. and dinner from 4 - 10 p.m.

Next to the restaurant, the open-air Water’s Edge Lounge serves from 2-10 p.m Monday through Friday and 2-11 p.m. on weekends. It features delicious appetizers as well as perhaps the best beverage selection in Topeka, including an upscale wine list, Bella Verde vodka and Stella Artois beer on tap to name a few. Five Guys Burgers and Fries

Five Guys was one of the last restaurant openings of 2014. As a part of the Crosswinds Commons, Five Guys joins other businesses, such as McAlister's Deli and Pie Five. Five Guys offers fast casual dining, with fresh (never frozen!) burgers and fries. The Topeka Five Guys location is the first in the states of Kansas or Missouri to offer milkshakes.

Freddy's Frozen Custard prides itself on recreating old-fashioned favorites, using hard work and integrity as the main ingredients in every meal. Gage Center Bowl

Sure, you can knock down pins at Gage Center Bowl, but this place is also known for its food. In fact, plenty of folks come here just to eat. Start out the day with breakfast favorites: eggs, hash browns, bacon, sausage, toast, pancakes, French toast, juice and coffee. Then check out the cheesy pizza. Probably the best thing, says proprietor Rex Haney, are Gage Bowl’s burgers. “Great burgers,” he says, “great chicken strips, the pizza is very good.” The restaurant seats about 50 people.
