Daddy Cakes is the only place you will find gourmet cupcakes in the Topeka area. Enjoy a "Daddy Cake," which is a cupcake the size of a Texas muffin, or a "Baby Cake," which is a regular size cupcake. If you're concerned about the health impacts of a giant-sized cupcake, try a "Skinny Cake," a cupcake featuring 200 calories or less, fewer than five grams of fat and healthier ingredients than your normal cupcake. After a holiday party with my work group, we were treated with a beautifully wrapped box containing a DaddyCake. I chose chocolate and loved it. This the real thing---so much better than a box mix. If you like quality, this is the place!

Have pizza at Via's, grab a DaddyCake for dessert, and head to Kaner's (on 6th St.) for coffee. All locally owned Topeka businesses which to me are the best!

After meeting with the owner of Daddy Cakes at a January 2008 bridal show, my wife and I were enthused about finding a pasty chef that would make a wedding cake with a ganache instead of a butter cream. My wife can not stand butter cream and did not want it on her wedding cake.

We made an appointment with the owner at the show. Included in the appointment was the kind of cakes we wished to sample as well as the ganache. We called the shop two days after the bridal show to reschedule the appointment.

When we arrived for the appointment, the door was locked and the person inside did not with to open the door. We told her we were there for a tasting and she reluctantly let us in. The employee said that the owner tried to call us to say that she had to cancel the appointment. Since the number we gave the owner was my wife's cell number, we informed the employee we did not get the message and asked what number she called.

The employee rattled off a number that was not correct and became huffy when we said that was not the correct number. She then said that the owner was not going to be there but she had left some cakes for use to taste.

Neither "daddy cake" was the flavor we had asked for and both were topped with butter cream. Neither my wife nor I were pleased.

We left and decided that even though this shop was with in walking distance from our house, we would give our business to a woman named Jill in Holton instead.

The store is small and cramped

The girl behind the counter was rude

The cake was average I have had better and for a $1.99 for a "baby cake" I expect more.

I purchased 3 for a cost of @ $7.00 my 4 yr old didn't even want to finish the pink one that I got special for her, we were drawn to the store by the giant marquee sign on Gage that said FREE Cupcakes 1-17 turns out that they were only for the 1st 200 not that this information was on the Gage Center sign nor was it posted outside the store and when I asked about it I was given the impression that it was somehow my fault that I didn't know this from other sources of advertising for the event. Parish forbid that I be swayed by the 200 foot marquee along the major thoroughfare of Gage blvd. However since I had already told the child that I was getting her a cupcake I really didn't have much choice that to purchase the items.

Would I still be irritated if they were beyond good and I was merely inconvenienced, probably but not nearly as much as I am over average cake and rude service.

Seriously buy a box mix and spend some time baking with the kids and you will get a much better reward.

I am a returning customer who can't get over how much better their cupcakes keep getting. I think after a year of being open the cupcakes have really hit their stride. The house buttercream frosting on the red velvet is out of this world and even better than I remember. The red velvet cake is a true red cocoa inspired dream. I have not found better chocolate cake. The atmosphere is like a fairy land. The service kind. Add this to your bucket list - show up around 11:30 or 12:00 when they are super fresh and all varieties are on display. Eat a red velvet with some Iwig milk. Topeka doesn't know how lucky it is to have a place like this.

Not too shabby!

My son and I went here after seeing the website. I had the chocolate angel food cake with a meringue frosting. It was pretty good (but a bit messy to eat) Since I'm watching what I eat it was a nice treat and didn't have to worry about gaining a ton from one cupcake. My son had some sort of a blueberry cupcake I think with blue frosting. I tasted a tiny bit and the frosting was delicious! A bit pricy though. Over $4 for 2 regular cupcakes. It's a nice treat to have once in a while though. I would recommend!

My grandma couldn't make them better!

This place is a dream come true for Topeka. Their cakes are delicious and the fosting is to die for. We've tried many of the flavors. My favorites are Strawberry Short Cake and Billy Vanilly. We have tried the Daddy Cakes, the Baby Cakes and the Skinny Cakes. The Baby Cakes are your best bet, as the Daddy Cakes do tend to be a little dry. And, if you are going to indulge in a cupcake why waste your time on a Skinny Cake?!

Seriously. Try the Baby Cakes. All of the flavors are amazing. The cake is moist, even 3 days after baking. I love that you can go in and buy one single cupcake, or take home a dozen. I hope Daddy Cakes is around for a long time to come!

Yuck!

These cupcakes are terrible! We got the Strawberry Shortcake ones. The cake itself was very dry. The butter cream frosting was greasy and had a strange flavor; it kind of tasted like cough syrup. My 5 year old son wouldn't even eat the cupcake, that's saying something. We won’t be back.

Hi Dendri -
Thanks for your response to our comment. We are not a large corporation as you implied. We are a family ran business and we really appreciate everyone in Topeka. There has been several people - including Topeka residents - that have been confused by the two companies operating under the same brand name, especially online. We were just trying to clear up the confusion that has occured in several the online communities/blogs like this one.

Have Fun!

I have a huge sweet tooth and was excited to try the cupcakes. The girl who was working was WAY too busy to deal with me, but did so grudgingly. It must have been horrible having to tell me what was in the cupcakes when the sign was right there telling me what kind of cupcake it was. I should have known what a root beer float cupcake would be like. I bought 6 different ones, brought them home to my family, they were so pretty, we were so excited. We cut each one in pieces so we could all try each one. The carrot cake one was ok. Only OK. The rest were not good at all. They were out of red velvet and I will go back to try it, but if it's as bad as the rest of them, I see yet another business try the little building in Gage Center going out of business. Sorry.

can figure it out

Small, locally-owned bakery in Kansas versus large corporation in California, I’m not confused, relax.

Love it!

This place is fabulous. I’ve walked in many times for a treat and they did beautiful and delicious cupcakes for my wedding that the guests adored. Strawberry shortcake is the best. They’re also a great business to have in our community as they help support local non-profits.

Not good

I gave this place a star for their frosting, but the cake is awful. Dry, dry dry. I have tried almost all of the varieties of cakes and the cake is just plain bad.
The service was passable. I was there on several occasion at various times of the day. The husband and wife were working on one occasion and she was just rude to me.
I can't believe anyone would pay to have dry cakes served with rudeness.

You aren't going to find much more than cupcakes here. But then again, that is the business they are in. Looking for an alternative to bringing donuts for your co-workers? A dozen amazing Daddy Cakes will make you an instant candidate for employee of the month.
