The long-time Silver Lake Chinese Restaurant keeps customers waiting all week long until it throws open its doors at 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights. Within 10 minutes, all the tables are full, says owner Raymond Sun. “Very, very busy,” he said.



Speck's Bar and Grill

2105 SW Mission Ave., Topeka
In 1957, Franklin "Speck" Benge opened the Seabrook Tavern, but regulars also knew it as Speck's since it was quite literally Speck's place. The Seabrook is now downtown and Speck's daughter, Debbie Maichel, opened Speck's in the original Seabrook location in her dad's name in August 2009.

Speck's picture is on the sign outside and on the wall inside. Plus, Speck's sells the three-pound “Original Speck Burger.” Beyond the burger named for her dad, the menu is full of food named after other family members.



Subway Cafe

3217 S.W. Topeka, Topeka

The Subway Cafe, a more sit-down version of the regular Subway stores, opened in March 2014. It is the first of its kind in Kansas, said Joe Russell, Subway’s chief operations officer. The restaurant has a traditional Subway menu, as well as coffee shop offerings, including coffee, espresso, cappuccinos, smoothies and a pastry line with danishes, muffins and cinnamon rolls.
