The Jose Pepper's franchise originated in the Kansas City area, and specializes in fresh, authentic Mexican cuisine.

CEO Tom Hance said Jose Pepper’s strives to provide a fun, extremely casual dining experience. “It’s a very warm atmosphere,” he said. “It’s festive with lots of bright colors – reds, greens, oranges and yellows.”

The restaurant is well known for its Espinaca Con Queso – a blend of jalapeno cheese, onions, ripe tomatoes and a touch of spinach, served with hot tortilla chips. There are also lots of child-friendly amenities including balloons, coloring books and crayons and a kids menu, making it a popular destination for families on weeknights and weekends.

Mid afternoon service is not good

We had a similar experience around 4PM last Saturday. The service was horrible, the food wasn't very fresh, our waitress disappeared, then found out she had a personal problem and she just left. But not before she knocked over my drink and messed up the credit card bill. She didn't offer to replace the drink or take it off the bill. This happens a lot to places that are short staffed in the afternoon. They seem to have plenty of staff and good service when the place is busy, but the food is just mediocre.

Went there for the first time on Saturday with adult son and mother. Won't go back.

The food was lacking in flavor. The only flavor in the salsa was if you happen to get a hit of cilantro in the bite. The entree's were....not good. Mom & I had some kind of "chicken burro". The only seasoning was pepper and lots of it. Son had a flavorless chicken enchilada. Waited 15 minutes for the server to bring sour cream, she pulled a disappearing act and we didn't see her again until a complaint was placed with the manager.

Manager was too busy running food and making drinks at the bar. (Yes there was a bartender there.) The place was not that busy, since it was 2:00 in the afternoon. The booth behind us was also questioning the whereabouts of the server.

The manager would be better served working the dining room and talking to guests to get some feed back. There were many unhappy patrons on this Saturday. Usually we give a place two visits, as any establishment can have an off day. This one though, one & done.

Of all the restaurants in Topeka, KS, Jose Peppers is by far the best. The food and service is superb. Hats off to the management team, for hiring staff, who do an awesome job. I have eaten there several times, and this restaurant runs like a well oiled machine. I have never seen a staff member, who wasn't smiling and who wasn't willing to please the patrons. This restaurant sets the high standards, that other restaurants should follow. Thank you and hats off to all who work, for this restaurant.

The food here is just terrible. The chips were soggy from the oil, but the salsa tasted good. We asked for new chips, and the next batch was decent. Both of our entrees came soaked in grease. My partner's tacos split in half when he picked them up because of it. I got some kind of chicken covered in cheese and there was a thick layer of grease separating it. I don't think I've had worse food anywhere.

BEST chips and salsa!

Their chips and salsa cannot be beat! Flexibility is the highlight here. They practically encourage special orders....anything on the menu can be made with any meats and changed to fit your palate. You can substitute rice & beans for other things, like a fresh fruit bowl or cottage cheese. LOVE the fruit option. Get the espinaca cheese dip for just 99 cents! Service is lacking though, so be warned, but you won't be disappointed with the food.

I would like to thank all the staff at Jose Peppers as everyone there are very professional and pleasant
Several of the waitress and waiters make sure that your coffee, water & tea is always full including any salsa or chips. Paulino and Monica are two of the great staff that are effecient and very pleasant. They talk with you and make you feel at home. I wish all resturants in Topeka could be as clean and food hot when served.

Only one thing that I could suggest is that the food at times can be way too spicy at times almost too spicy to eat. If this could be toned down just a bit it would help alot. It's only spicy at times as though someone dropped the spice bottle in the mix.

Otherwise I can't say enough about the resturant, staff and cooks.

Thank you Jose Peppers!

Of all the Mex restaurants in Topeka, I've dined at most of them...Tacos El Mexicano, Tacos El Sol, Jose Peppers, Pepe n Chelas, El Centinela, Carlos O'Kellys, and on and on...variety is great in Topeka.
My favorites, by far were Tacos El Mexicano for authentic food, and Jose Peppers for that TexMex style.
I was surprised at some of the complaints about Jose "what, another Mexican restaurant in Topeka"? Arghhhh. I've dined at Jose Peppers roughly 6 times, and each time the service was fantastic, and the food was delicious, served hot. Their presentation is 2nd to none in Topeka.
Ignore the complaints. If you want Tex Mex, go to Jose Peppers. If you want authentic, go to Tacos El Mexicano. Both are fabulous.
To the negative reviewers: get a life, folks. We're lucky to have good choices in Topeka.

This is our favorite place! We just love it. The food, service, MARGARITAS, just everything. We love to sit at the bar and visit with Joe. He makes you feel like an old friend. We went on New Year’s Eve for dinner, there were six of us and I think we had six wait staff waiting on us. We never wanted for a thing. The portions are large enough that most of the time we split a meal. The kitchen will split the meal and give you each your own beans and rice. We're going Friday and Saturday night this week. (Different friends with us each night) I can't recommend it enough.

I have mostly had good food there. Their stuffed jumbo jalapenos are excellent. The spinach queso is quite good as well.

Jan our waitress bugged us about dogs all night!!!

Our waitress noticed a picture that I had of our pit bull and she constantly bugged us all night She kept telling us about her business of trying to save all the dogs from the humane shelter. Telling us how horrible the society was and how they kill everything they can. My dog came from a lovely humane shelter and I was hirrified that a waitress would go on and on about this while we were trying to enjoy dinner. People pay attention to your employees. They are running customers off!

Endless Free chips & salsa. The Avacado Chicken Dish($9.95 w beans and rice) was Delicious. The Margarita Fabulous!(I had the two for $10. This is the only Mexican food I will be eating in Topeka from now on!Dont care if it is NOT authentic.I wasn't sick the next day, & that is a plus! Excellent service & nice gross green outside blg color! We were not rushed out the door before we were finished eating like the other low budget Mexican resturants in Topeka! Here's to Jose Peppers!

Very good chain resturant food

Ok - it's not real Mexican food. If you want real Mexican food, then go to the east side. La Siesta is the best - but this is west Topeka, restuarant chain food. And it is great! We've been several times and have yet to be disappointed. The Mahi tacos are some of the best that I've ever had. I laugh at the complaints about portion size. Either you are a pig and and your idea of proper portion size is an all you can eat buffet or you don't know what you are talking about. You're complaining just to complain. We always leave food on our plates. They give you endless chips and salsa - which are excellent - and you complain about portion size???
My only issue is the call ahead seating which means you still wait when you get there. Other than that - a great place to eat.

We are going back soon

Seriously, folks - this si a chain restaurant on Wanamaker - were you expecting actual authentic Mexican cuisine?
Go to the East side and eat at family run places like Tacos el Mexicano.

Wait staff was rather annoying and not very knowledgeable past their basic canned speech they could give about the menu. Ask them about particular meals or ingredients and the thousand yard stare starts. Portion size would have been disappointing...if the food had been good. Ours was cold and looked suspiciously like cafeteria food. Suspicions were confirmed when we discovered it was very bland and the ingredients did not appear to be fresh at all; they seemed mostly frozen or canned, and maybe even microwaved. The wait staff tried to make up for their ineptitude by asking every 30 seconds if we needed more to drink or how the food was. They did this with 3 different waiters, so, in other words, they didn't know what the other was doing. Very, very annoying.

So So...

My wife and I went on Sat 9/11/10 and I can't say that we were very excited about the place. The service was very poor and it was very noisy with the music way higher then it needed to be for a Sat afternoon. The food that we had was ok but not really anything to get excited about. I will give them credit for having very good chips and salsa! But I think that the poor service sort of set the tone for the rest of the meal...I know that we have no interest in going back.

The environment was great and the food was even better. Not just your run of the mill mexican restaurant where everyone has the same thing on their menu. Their espinaca dip was out of this world. If you are looking for a place to sit and talk at the bar you should try and go on a night that Tiffany is there. She is so much fun and will make sure that you are really satified with your drink and your dinner. Shes AWESOME and we cant wait to go back!!
