Manny's opened during the last week of 2012 and features a variety of tasty gyros and subs. Owner Derar Ali brought his popular Manny’s sub shop from the Washington, D.C., area to the former Bobo’s west location, just north of the West Ridge Mall.

No stranger to Topeka, Ali lived here in the 1970s while a graduate student at KU and he owned the former Venus restaurant in the mid-1980s. When it came time to retire, he decided Topeka was the place.

Manny’s most popular sandwich was the Philly cheese steak. “People would come from far away just for our steak and cheese,” Ali said.

Manny's 1/2 pound burger with fries was the best that I have had in years. Fresh beef burger was juicy and loaded with fresh veggies and the generous portion of fries were golden brown and delicious. My wife had the chicken Gyro platter and she is still raving about it.
We took home a a few orders of Baklava and ate that for desert with ice cream ----delicious also!
Very clean establishment, fast service and friendly/helpful staff.
Manny's is definitely a diamond in the rough; I can't believe we didn't have to wait in line to get in the door!

Still VERY please with Manny's

Love the gyro, chicken slovaki(no idea how to spell it), philly's, fries, pretty much everything. I tried the hummus and wasn't to thrilled with how plain it was and wished that we had enough pita bread to go with the massive serving of hummus. I love Manny's and the folks that run the place including their staff. I continue to be a fan :)

Stopped In Monday Night

The wife and I stopped in at Manny's Monday evening. We went inside and sat down. The waitress was ready to take our order, and we both got gyro platters. They also have hummus so we ordered a side of that with pita bread.

To be honest, the hummus was okay, but not really my favorite.
The star of the show was the Gyro platter. The gyro was large, with plenty of warm tasty meat, feta cheese, lettuce tomato and onion with a decent amount of tzatziki sauce. The platter also comes with a Greek style salad and hot crisp french fries.

This was a great meal, and I am happy to support a local business. The server was attentive and we left full and content.

Good food and excellent service

Ate there for the first time today and had the gyro with grilled onions. The service was quick, had my sandwich in hand in 5 minutes. It was pretty big and really fresh and tasty.

The counter waitress was very friendly and attentive to all the customers.

Will definitely go back for more.

Very good!

I have been to Manny's twice now and really enjoyed the food each time. Granted, I've only ever had the Gyro, but each time it was great. My only complaints is the small size and when I went the last time it was silent, and the previous comment about hearing other people's conversations was true for me as well. However, all of that is pretty minor, as I do love the Gyros.

Still Open

I really do like the food, but the service has been lacking. I hope they get it turned around and survive.

Is Manny's still open?

I was one of the first people to comment on Manny's and it wasn't all "glowing." Then there were comments about how wonderful it was, etc. I've been by there several times at lunch time and supper time and there doesn't seem to be but 2 or three cars each time. With Menard's open - I would think this would increase the traffic flow to Manny's. How long can you stay in business with so few customers???? The people that initially raved about it must not be returning in droves.

Good Gyros

We went tonight and found the gyros to be wonderful. The meat is well flavored and not greasy. The tzatziki was good and the feta cheese was plentiful. The service was attentive. The waitress was very helpful.

Good food, mass confusion

I stopped in today for lunch, and while waiting on my food I noted mass confusion. From people not knowing how to operate the register to the owner hurredly rushing around, it is apparent that after several weeks they still do not have a good system down.

My gyro was very good, and I will return again for more, but alas unless they get organized, I'm afraid they won't last long.

My advice - hire an experienced manager!

What can be said about Manny's... Well it is good for what it is. One thing i can't stand is when a place has complete silence. It's very awkward when no music or anytime of noise is in background. All you here is every word of other customers. The girls working were very polite and knowledgable. Food came pretty quick. I had the Gyro and it tasted exactly like the other twenty places i frequented while living in NYC. I've never been to Greece but this is what is served in traditional Greek restaurants in NY. I was happy with the Gyro. My fiance had the Philly Cheesesteak. It was very good but nowhere near an authentic sandwich from Philadelphia. They adk if you want everything witch is lettuce, tomato, onion and mayo. Onion should really be the only one of those offered. Don't order this hoping it will be similar to Pat's or Gino's in Philly. It was tastey for what it was though. Onion rings are nice and crispy as well. All in all i will return for my beloved Gyro.

Nothing new...

I was excited to try Manny's. However, I have been there a couple of times and eaten there once. The first time I ate there I used the drive-in. The service was alright. The staff was not knowledgable of the (really very basic) menu that they had. But I got my gyro which tasted pretty good.

The second time I went there I went inside. I waited and waited and waited. Know acknowledgement of our presence. Everyone got their orders taken and we sat there while the THREE employees taking the orders seemed to run around like chickens with their heads cut off. It was pretty pathetic. After awhile we just got up and walked out. Most of my friends that have eaten there had the same experience. They say the food is alright. But the service is terrible. If you can deal with this kind of service and you think burgers, subs, gyros, etc... are worth it, go for it! Otherwise, it's just another sandwich shop with mediocre to bad service.

Most places in this location don't last. With service like this, I would say go eat there while you can before they're gone.

LOVE at first bite

So at the risk of sounding like a typical Topekan salivating at just the thought of a new restaurant and wanting to stuff my face as soon as those doors open, MANNY'S IS AMAZING! My husband, two children, and I went shortly after the opening and we tried the cheeseburger, onion rings, gyro, chicken strips, and fries. Last night we went back (which was actually my third trip) and split the philly cheesesteak and chicken souvlaki. All I can say is WOW and I simply don't understand the few negative comments that are floating around. New restaurants are always going to have to work out a few kinks but Manny's is truly what we need in Topeka, more eclectic choices with quality food that shines. I have to say that although it's hard to choose, the chicken souvlaki is my favorite so far. As long as Manny's continues on with great customer service, quality food, and has their doors open we will continue to enjoy.

I would love to see them have a college day like a lot of businesses in Topeka. Something such as 10% off on Wednesdays with a Student ID-just a suggestion ;)

We were in Topeka and thought we'd give it a try...

Stopped in today. The help was very, very nice, the fellow I assumed to be the owner was also willing to go out of his way to be helpful. The gyro was very good, reminded me of the doner kebabs I've had in Europe. Everything was fresh, the staff was friendly. Ran into a friend who was having spaghetti/meatballs and he said it was very good, in fact he said the meatballs were excellent. Baklava was also very good. I would have liked a good, thick Siracha-style hot sauce for my gyro.

Gyro!!!

Thanks for the explanation. Glad I'm not the only one that wasn't smitten by Manny's Philly sandwich. I will try Manny's again - perhaps just a cheese burger. I tried the seasoned fries - nothing special. The onion rings looked good - so would try those. By the way, if you want THE BEST philly sandwich ever (IMO)- try Pepperjax in Lawrence! It is to die for.

I went to Manny's last night. The carhop was sweet, but it took a really long time to get the food. I got the gyro, and the meat was delicious. I didn't like the tzatziki very much, though. It was way too strong tasting. I like to taste the cucumber, not an overwhelming amount of garlic. It just tasted like sour cream and garlic to me. The boyfriend got the Philly. He said it was an "interesting take" but I'm not sure he liked it all that much. The baklava was delicious, and their side salad was great! I like the chunks of feta so you can choose how much you want on everything. I think this place could be great, and I'll give them another try for sure.

Why was my post removed. It was politely written with some positive comments. I just didn't think the Philly Cheese steak was that great. Are just positive comments all that are left up?

My boyfriend and I tried this place today. I got the gyro and he got the philly cheese steak. The gyro was amazing! It was better than my favorite Mediterranean restaurant in Lawrence, and the sandwich was twice the size for about a dollar less. The philly cheese steak was by far the best I've ever had. The hot peppers on it made it unique and tasty. I would definitely recommend this place, even if you don't like Mediterranean food.

Wife brought home a couple of Philly Cheese Steak subs tonight, and they are great. The zesty flavor really hits the spot on a cold January night. We have a menu at home and we look forward to sampling other items such as cheese cake and gyros.
