Arby's has offered an alternative for Americans hungry for something other than a hamburger since the first restaurant opened in Boardman, Ohio, in 1964. Roast beef is the staple of this casual, fast-food restaurant. Chicken sandwiches, potato cakes and Jamocha shakes are a few of the other popular items. This restaurant has a drive-thru. Baker's Dozen Donuts

4310 S.W. 21st St., Topeka

Baker's Dozen, which began in 2004 as a mom-and-pop style doughnut store, is now a 24-hour-a-day operation. The S.W. 21st St. store recently moved a few blocks west into an 11,000-square-foot building that offers a 24-hour drive-through window seven days a week. The spacious dining room hours on 21st St., where all of the store's baking is done, are now 3 a.m. to 10 p.m. The S.E. 29th St. store, which used to be the baking site, remains open from 6 a.m. to noon daily.

Regulars will still find the popular Peanut Butter and Jelly Donut and the Chocolate and Peanut Butter Donut, with fresh batches now made twice a day. And you still get more for your money at Baker's Dozen, which stays true to its name by adding an extra doughnut to every dozen you purchase. Diabetic? No problem! Bobo's Drive In

2300 S.W. 10th St., Topeka

Visit one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas Cuisine -- an award bestowed on this classic Topeka burger drive in by the Kansas Sampler Foundation in June 2009.

Bobo's has been a Topeka tradition since 1948 and was featured on the Food Network show "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" in 2008. It is famous for its handmade apple pies -- served by the slice or whole pie -- and its onion rings, which also are made fresh every day. Car hops take your order and bring your food to your car.

Anyone who has lived in Topeka very long knows about Bobo's. Most have eaten there at one time or another. And when people move away and come back to visit, many just have to have a burger at Bobo's. (Updated 6.25.09)
