Forbes Snack Bar at Forbes Golf Course

700 S.W. Capehart Rd., Topeka

After hitting a bucket of balls or finishing nine holes, the snack bar at Forbes Golf Course offers food to fill your belly. The fare isn’t fancy. Then again, sometimes a chili dog (a big seller) just hits the spot. The prices are cheep, too.
Grab a can of beer (or a six pack) before hitting the course with buddies. Or choose something more hydrating, like Gatorade.
Forbes also offers a party room for special events and tournaments. The course is open sunup to sundown, and the snack bar is open whenever the course is. (Updated 5.28.10)

Sure, you can knock down pins at Gage Center Bowl, but this place is also known for its food. In fact, plenty of folks come here just to eat. Start out the day with breakfast favorites: eggs, hash browns, bacon, sausage, toast, pancakes, French toast, juice and coffee. Then check out the cheesy pizza. Probably the best thing, says proprietor Rex Haney, are Gage Bowl’s burgers. “Great burgers,” he says, “great chicken strips, the pizza is very good.” The restaurant seats about 50 people. You can call in advance to reserve lanes or space for a party. (Open bowling ends around 9 p.m. Mondays and Saturdays for league bowling.)(Updated 5.24.10)

Gas & Shop

1900 N. Topeka Blvd., Topeka

Sure, the name of this North Topeka place is Gas & Shop, but it could easily be Gas & Eat. You’ll have a hard time finding any place in town that sells more biscuits and gravy than this gas station and convenience store does between 5 and 11 a.m. each day. The place goes through at least 12 gallons of gravy a day – 18 to 20 gallons during a weekend breakfast shift. Gas & Shop always has a pot of hot homemade chili and sells homemade sandwiches with Fanestil meat, including the popular Fanestil Party Time Ham sandwich. Those food items are available until midnight.
Food has been a big part of Gas & Shop since the place opened in 1980 or 1981. And owners give thanks for their loyal customers, who continued patronizing Gas & Shop when construction on the neighboring Topeka Boulevard Bridge decreased traffic to the area and threatened business before the bridge reopened in 2008. Gas & Shop pays customers back with inexpensive prices. (Updated 5.28.10)
