Topeka Steak House

Went to Topeka Steakhouse on May 10th. We were planning to go elsewhere, but someone in our party didn't want to go to this particular place, so they said we should go to Topeka Steakhouse. There were nine people in our party and had the "partyroom".Appetizers were OK, but main courses left something to be desired. Meat was fatty,cooked NOT to order (asked for Med. the meat was WellDone), food arrived "warm" NOT hot, waitress spilled tea on my husband's lap while refilling a glass, my husband's order was "lost" and didn't arrive until everyone else was about done eating Oh Wait! Did I tell you it was my Birthday? When paying my husband told cashier about the overcooked steak, her reply:"I'm Sorry". Did not offer for us to talk to manager. It was our daughter's first time there- she said she doesn't ever want to go back. So we Won't.

I have only eaten there this one time and I will never go back. This place makes McDonald's look like an Operating Room. Filthy. Everything about this place is filthy. The tables, the condiments, the sugar dispensers, even the salt shaker had a layer of unidentifiable funk on it. When the waitress brought out our ten salads, she asked us to pass them down the table because "by this time of night my hands are too dirty to be touching food". I am not making this up, she really said that. We should have bailed right then and there but we hung in there hoping the food would be worth it. Wrong!!! Low quality frozen crap. When my daughter pulled what looked to be a burnt dead bird from her burger, we were done. I complained to the manager, who took $38 off of our $188 bill. I guess that was better than nothing. Service - poor. Food - poor. Cleanliness - dangerous. The health department should this place down until they clean it up. And show your waitresses where the soap and water is and teach them to wash their nasty hands!!!

I too refuse to go to Topeka State House because of the environment and the food.

This is what is called, constructive criticism. It appears that since you post a comment after each negative post,that you truly care about the establishment that you work. So, put up...or hush up.

Use the constructive criticism to turn things around. Instead of spending time yakking with your co-workers or texting....grab a bucket and some cleaning items and clean the place up!!! The walls, floors, tables, chairs, salt, pepper, condiment bottles are sticky, filthy.

The food, which you may not have a say in, isn't much better. If I order a salad, I would hope that the establisment doesn't just open a bag of lettuce, with carrot strips and cabbage squiggles and call it a salad. The cuts of steak are not quality.

Do something about it...instead of posting remarks back trying to defend. You have guest after guest after guest telling you there are problems.

How do you know how Topeka Steakhouse compares to the places he likes to eat? He didn't name a single one.

As for the rest of his comments, they are spot on. I haven't eaten at TSH in several years after being drug there annually for a company party. It was always dirty, dark, and service sucked. Sounds like nothing has changed.

You don't need to get on here an post a rebuttal to every negative comment. It just makes you look like a shill.

I took my family to eat at the Topeka Steakhouse and initially I thought it was going to be buffet style because of the wide open dining. It was very dark inside and I was a little apprehensive about taking my family to be seated, but we were out for a new dining experience. We sat down at a very dirty table, sticky chairs... and as we looked around, noticed greasy dirt stuck to wall art, floors were grimy, and wait staff not on the ball. However, the proof is in the pudding, so to speak. The meals arrived and we all had ordered steak dinners. The flavor was good, but the meat was not cooked proplerly as individually ordered, and the meat was pretty fatty. We were very disappointed in the salad, and did return a drink because there was foreign matter floating in it as it was placed on the table. We have not returned because we feel that when we dine out, it is supposed to be a positive experience and eating at the Topeka Steakhouse was not a positive experience. People must not expect much when they go to eat there, because the parking lot was full. Looking around, most of the people were not looking any better than the restaurant and probably didn't care about the cleanliness of the kitchen. We did not clean our plates and we did not take home left overs. We will not be back.

We were there tonight and had one of "the high school" waitress. She was better than any waitress that we had in Topeka. The food is always good and if not they will replace it. We come here for the good food so if you do not like it then please stay away. Go by any night the parking lot is full of happy customers.

My family went here after a wedding rehersal and the food was the worst i have ever had out to eat. The jalapeño poppers were really greesy, the salad unadorned and out of a bag. They don't even add croutons! The prime rib was tough and overcooked, the aju oversalted, the french fries soggy and greesy. I got sick that night from the food. The server was good, she kept our drinks full. The decor is beyond outdated. Save your money, eat at home. Or find another restaurant.

Unlike the ranter who hasn't eatten there in 18 months I have and enjoyed it. Would eat there more often but I get home after work I don't want to drive that far to eat since I live northwest of town.

Have eatten there for more years then many posters have lived and can only think of maybe once I went away not totally pleased.

I haven't eaten at this place in 18 months and I would never go back. The food is mediocre at best. I had their prime rib and I asked for rare I got med well I sent it back and they sent out a steak they had grilled just long enough to take the red off the outside it was still cold. The tables are completely sticky because the are FILTHY. Not just a little, they are gross. I am amazed they have the clientele that they do because nothing about the experience was positive. As for the folks who are sick of the complaints then I'd suggest you quit reading Food and Flicks, because there will be more and more people on here voicing their opinion that this place is a dump.

To the owner.....clean it up,fresh paint, get some new flooring. I have NEVER seen such nasty carpet. Salad is just chopped up lettuce, yuck. However, steak was very tasty and tender. But I worried about the cleanliness of the kitchen. Therefore we will NEVER eat there again unless I hear of changes.

I have been going there for years. Food is always good, prices are good and portions are big. The help is ok (except 1 waitress). Waitress will take order and bring food then will stop by occasionally. They have people that do nothing but refill the drinks and they keep moving constantly. All waitresses are fine except one and you can't miss her because you can hear her from anywhere your will hear Sweetie, Honey, Sugar, etc constantly ala 1940's and 50's. Many employers would not tollerate this today. I personally find it very annoying and disrespectful. She will argue with customers, last Saturday I seen her bring 3 different meals out and took all 3 to the wrong table then argue about it. Can't imagine what keeps her employed. If you go to TSH and you should just ask for anyone except Ms Sweetie, they'll know what you mean.

We've been going there for years and love it. Friendly service, great food and atmosphere. Love it!

We quit eating there after the waitress took our order and then sat down to visit with friends. She could have at least brought our drinks and salads before her visitation. We let the manager know that 30 minutes of waiting was too much.
We really miss the great salads and home-made bleu cheese dressing, but it is true that the place needs some Mr. Clean wiped over the doors and the tables and the pictures and the walls.

There is no other place in Topeka that gives you the best food for the price. We go by every day and when we go there to eat they are very busy. The complainers need to stay home and we will not miss them.

The salads are poured out of a bag into the serving station. I have seen the waitresses do this many times.

We used to eat there every Friday. Now we don't go at all, and we haven't for over a year.

The place is filthy. The waitresses run like there is no tomorrow. The quality of the food went downhill drastically as soon as minimum wage went up.

And I agree, the owner sits in his chair and likes to watch the pretty young waitresses just a little bit too closely for my comfort. Granted, from where he sits, he has a great vantage point over the two larger dining rooms but he should do something other than sit there. If he were excelling as an owner/manager, he would not need to watch over things so closely. He could do what other managers/owners in the business do. He could get up and talk to his guests. Get some feedback from them on the lack of quality in the food, and the general atmosphere of filth and whip cracking that this place has.

By some of these reviews I wonder if we are talking about the same place. If you are looking for Ruth Criss type of Steak House then yes you are going to be disappointed. If, however, you are looking for a great example of Kansas down home steak or fried chicken dinner it doesn't get better than the Topeka Steak House!

The steaks are tasty, tender, hot, juicy and very reasonably priced. This place is a real true to life candidate for the Food Channels Diners, Drive Ins & Dives Show. This is Kansas farm cooking at it's best! Topeka is the King of chains and the Topeka Steak House is an exception to this all too common occurance.

If you do have any problem at all and don't say something it is your own fault! The owner sits at a desk overseeing everything that goes on all the time. You have to walk within 10 feet of him entering or leaving the restaurant. If your not happy get up and walk over to him and say something!

"WARNING" when you have a group eating here you have the 15% tip automatically added to your bill as like most restaurants. The difference is this restaurant adds the tax to the bill and then basis the tip on the total. This practice is ok to management. This is not done at other resturants. Our group will not be eating here again.

Terrible terrible food. Worse service. The place isn't clean and no one seems to care. On our way out the little girl at the front desk asked how everything was and for once someone was honest with them and we said "barely edible" and she looked like a deer in the headlights...absolutely no idea how to address a pleasant but obviously unhappy customer.
